My frozen breastmilk smells......soapy?!

posted 16th Jan
The other day I made a post about my DS suddenly rejecting the bottle. The suggestions were to change the bottle or keep giving it to him. I knew something was up because he use to take the bottle with no problem. I try to think about what we did different and I realized we were giving him frozen milk. SO and I opened the bag and it smelled soapy. Now I know frozen milk smells different than freshly expressed milk but after I googled I read something about excess lipase. Has anyone dealt with this before?

I'm not fully convinced that it is excess lipase because my freshly expressed milk still smells and taste good at the 5 day mark... it's just the frozen milk that seems to be effected. If you have dealt with excess lipase did you do the boiling method to try to salvage and freeze future milk? or did you just send your baby to childcare with freshly pumped milk each day? I'm afraid this might undermine my efforts to breastfeed exclusively

I dealt with that, and yeah, that's how the milk smelled. I ended up not able to freeze any milk and had to toss all the milk I had frozen. I wish I had good advice. I read you can scald the milk first, but I don't know exactly how that works. My son refused bottles anyways, so I gave up on the pumping thing anyways.

So did you continue to exclusively breastfeed? or did you supplement? I don't even know what to do anymore.

I exclusively breastfed for a year. Funny thing was that I didn't seem to have the problem with my 1st who I only pumped with (never actually nursed her). It sucked because I couldn't ever be away from him really, but we made it a year which was my goal.

Fudge. I start back at School on tuesday...... might have to toss (donate) the milk and start building up a new scalded stash.

Test the scalding method before you give it a good go- would hate to waste more milk! But yeah, that's pretty much the only way.

The good thing is fresh milk lasts quite a while in the fridge... So if, say, you work Mon-Friday, if you can pump a lot on the weekends and a bit through the week, you can maybe get away with just using fresh.

lucky you!

We finally was able to give him a bottle of freshly expressed milk. The soapy milk had him traumatized and fully rejecting the bottle.... Breastfeeding suddenly has become such a struggle
