Toddler Fell - Doctor Worthy?

posted 16th Jan
My daughter jumped off the couch last night and started to cry pretty hard. She told me her toe hurts (but it might be ankle or foot, she could be mixing it up). There is very little swelling, but it looks like maybe a bruise on the ankle/foot area on the outside. Today she is still limping and can't seem to put weight on it, but as long as she doesn't try to walk on it she seems to feel okay. It doesn't seem to hurt to move it, just to put weight on it.

I'm suspecting a sprain, which I know rest and ice is all you can really do. We try to avoid the Dr when possible because she has had a lot of bad experiences with Dr's and so appointments are a HUGE deal for her.

If she's still hurting tomorrow I figured I'd probably set up an appointment, but if she isn't in a lot of pain then it isn't likely to be broken, is it? That's what my step-mom said, but I guess I'm a little unsure.

Thanks!

if you can wiggle it around and movie it with no pain I would give it another day. Maybe wrap it in an ace bandage

you can have a broken bone in your foot and still walk on it. not comfortably but could still get around. i would take her in especially if you can visibly see something isnt right, like the swelling.

Sounds like a sprain. The fact the she can walk on it and just limp makes me highly doubt it is a break. Usually you can't put weight on broken bones! Good luck and hope she feels better!

See, that's what I was sort of thinking> I can rotate her ankle and she's fine. It's only if she puts weight on it and bends it, like to take a step forward. If she stretches it it seems fine, it's only at that bent point with weight that it hurts her. She's having a rough time staying off her feet, poor little girl is crawling around the house, haha.

I would take her in. Personally when I sprained my ankle it hurt like a bitch but when I broke my pinky in 3 places it was mostly numb and didn't hurt that bad.

My son just slipped and fell and managed to break his leg. He couldn't put weight on it, and he held it really close to his body. We didn't think it was broken, but I took him in anyway, and turns out it was broken. It wouldn't hurt to bring her in just in case.

I broke 4 bones in my ankle & walked on it. Take her in & get it X-rayed.

Bring her a treat to have during the visit; ask if you can stay with her during the X-ray

Yeah, I think maybe you guys are right and I should take her in, just to be safe. The last time it took me and two nurses to hold her down to let the Dr get close to her =( SHe was a preemie so she's had a lot of bad experiences with Dr's so I just try to avoid it when I can, but you're right.

I think I'll call the nurse line so they can get her an appointment.

She may have a hairline fracture. I broke my foot and walked (limped) on it for 3 days before my mom finally took me in (pain wasn't improving).

I say take her in to be checked just to be safe.

you wait until she is not paying attention and try wiggling it and /or lifitng it up and down - side to side - if she does not complain est bet is she is alright - but just to feel safe you should call the DR and she if they can see her

Thanks for asking. Update, I called her Dr and he said to give it a few more hours. The little stinker was jumping on the trampoline by then. I am thinking she was milking it for pity for a while. She's been running around fine since last night.
