Raising a child with no religion (athiest, agnostic, etc)

Neither me or DH are religious. I'm atheist and DH is agnostic.

For those of you who are there as well, do you have a god talk with your kids? I mean... I'm sure they'll here about jesus and god from different sources.

How do I go about addressing that with her? Do you explain different religions?

When DH is old enough I am going to be completely open and honest about all of it. I want to educate him on all the different types of religions so he can make an educated choice. At the same time I dont want to force it on him either lol. I'm probably going to wait untill he asks me about it, then go from there.

Watching this. My son is 4 and will more than likely be going to a private catholic school because the public schools around here are crap. But I'm thinking I'll approach it by showing him there are many religions out there and he can decide what he wants to believe in.

DD is only 16 months so SO and I aren't even close to that point yet, but when it does come to that, we plan on explaining to her our views and the views of others and she can choose what she believes in herself.

Watching! DH and I have fairly recently given up on religion. We still celebrate all the holidays though, mainly out of habit and ALL of our family are religous. We are just not sure at all how to go about raising our son when it comes to religion/non religion...

I plan on exposing and explaining multiple religions to her so she can be well educated. Lack of belief doesn't mean lack of education (not saying you think it does) so I think it's important to arm her with the information.

No.. I haven't mentioned "god" at all to my son. He wanted to watch veggie tales the one day and i told him no lol

Yes, I just explained that everyone has a different beliefs and that it is important for people to discover their own spiritual path.

As she got older and began questioning different faith groups, we would research them together. It was a great experience for both of us.

I'm not going to go out of my way to explain ANY religion, unless they ask. I'll tell what religion is, but I'm not going to explain catholics, christians and all that crap unless they want to know.

Now she is 5 and loves baby jesus. She repeats things like a little brain washed child like, "mama god made me." I tell her NO, mommy and daddy made you and flat out tell her that god/jesus has no power over you.

I'm sure her teachers love it.

I'd say when she starts to ask about it.

Ahhh.. this is why I could never ever send my kid to a religion based school. I don't want to create that conflict.

We were planning on explaining it to her when she asks us. whether it be when she is 2.5 or 10. granted the younger she is the less she would understand, but we will continue to educate her about the different religions there are and make it know to her that even though myself and her father are Atheist/Agnostic that it doesn't mean she has to be as well.
