Special Needs Pre-K

posted 16th Jan
Kids aren't required to be potty trained for special needs Pre-K, are they?

My daughter's therapist suggested that if possible it would be beneficial for her to spend half the day there and spend some time with the other kids in regular Pre-K as well. Would she have to be potty trained to spend a partial day in regular Pre-K?

Special Ed prek no. But it would probably have to be in their Iep for OT. Regular prek maybe. It depends. Is it a 3s or 4s program? What type of funding are the two? Here you can't be in tow programs unless ones private. U can be in head start or state funded. Not both.

Nope   it'll be apart of her IEP goals probably 6:7 of the kids in out class have it as a goal.

Oh good. I was hoping that was the case. I figured most kids in special pre-k have potty training issues.

Yep this was my exact experience with my son. He finally potty trained before the end of his first year of pre k.

Regular Pre-K would be the 3 year old program.

I'm not sure if she'll even be able to do a combination. It was just something her therapist suggested for her. We're still in the application processes.

Do they actually work on potty training with them during the day?

Yeah you'd have to see how they're funded. Our ecse classes are all headstart. But state does not fund a 3s program. So those are private. But headstart could have a full day program maybe? But for a 3 yr old I've never seen PTed as a requirement. And legally I dnt think u can descriminate against that. They can require pull ups and changing their own pull up but I think it's illegal to say no you cant come here. Even in a 4s program.

Yep. We've potty trained quite a few kids the last few years. One kid is doing an intense potty training therapy next week with her ABA and we will continue it at school.

If its an Iep goal they HAVE to. And most 3s prek will do frequent bathroom breaks. Or do reminders every hour. Etc.

Oh awesome. I wasn't sure if it was just a "change her pull up and go" type of thing, or if they actually worked on it. I feel bad with her being 3 and not potty trained, but it's taking a while for her to get it. She understands the concept because she does go sometimes, but I think she just doesn't really pay attention to when she needs to go.

That's awesome. The continuity will help a lot, I'm sure. If we go a day without working on it, it's like she "forgets" all about going potty.

Yeah just ask her teachers what they do there and tell them what works at home and they should work with you.
