re: New York's New Gun laws. Yay or Nay

posted 16th Jan
I am NOT saying that murder is less important - I am saying I don't believe more gun laws will save lives & we could in fact use that energy & those resources toward interventions to help people find life a bit more liveable.

Answered before you had a chance to push "post"...it is a waste of resources to push through more gun laws & end up prosecuting otherwise law abiding citizens who may do things like simply forget to register after 5 yrs IMO when I don't see them actually effecting death rates from gun violence.

If I wasn't on my phone, I'd find the story for you, but did you not hear of the mass murder that happened in another country the same day as the Sandy Hook shooting? That man used a knife and murdered multiple people. If I'm not mistaken, he killed more then 20 people that day.

Oh wow. Very interesting.

I'm not sure what laws nc has on knives, if any. I know knives aren't allowed on school property, some hospitals, and have a blade shorter then 3in to be carried in court houses.

But people who forget to renew their driver license, face similar consequences... My ex husband got pulled over and his was expired, the cop COULD have arrested him for being an unlicensed driver, instead he gave him a ticket.

I fail to see how thats any different. I don't see people BITCHING about having to renew your license to drive your car, but guns?! OH HELL NO.

Butterfly knives were illegal in NY up until.. Maybe 4 years ago? They were considered ballistic, even WITHOUT the spring assist trigger. IT was overturned, but still. It was a felony charge if you got caught with one, and MOST outside sales ( different states/internet sites) WOULD NOT sell or ship to a person who had a NY ID or a NY mailing address.

Yes & no. We require you to get your Driver's license renewed every so many years for entirely different reasons than the ones behind the gun laws.

HOW will requiring registration every 5 years reduce crime?
HOW will reducing the limit per magazine from 10 to 7 make a dent?

It also requires safe storage of guns for gun owners who live with someone who has been convicted of certain crimes, is under an order of protection, or who has been involuntarily committed as a result of a mental illness...which in itself is something that most people should do of course, but it won't necessarily ensure it actually happens, it will just hold criminally liable, AFTER THE FACT, anyone who they deem did not do so. Which, in cases like Sandy Hook would be pointless, since he killed her first.

Entirely different? Please elaborate.

Why do some of you say that it is "punishment" to not let regular citizens have assault weapons? Why do you need assault weapons? How is it "punishment" to require licenses and registration?

I don't think it is punishment - I think it is further reducing the civil liberties of law abiding citizens while likely have no effect on crime rates (since history has shown little to no impact with the majority of these "public safety" laws)...and if it doesn't effect crime rates, then it isn't necessary or warranted. If someone could show me how this change in law will actually prevent these crimes from happening, I am truly always open to new ideas. So far I am just not seeing it.

People's ability to drive changes much more often than their ability to own a firearm. If you have vision issues, coordination issues, develop any significant medical issues, etc - this can impact your ability to drive a car. You driving is also something with the potential to MORE likely impact other people's well being as the vast vast majority of gun owners are never in contact with other in relationship to the weapons they own...so if you have a propensity for having a seizure AND own a gun, I don't care...if you drive down the street my kids play on, I do care...and want to know you are capable of handling that vehicle. A relatively large number of people drive daily. A relatively SMALL SMALL number of people shoot on a daily basis or anywhere close to it & NOT usually among general public, but rather on remote property or at a range indoor or out.

FAR more people are impacted by driving in regards to injury & death than have ever been impacted by guns. I WOULD in fact support some stricter standards on driving tests as I think the US is way too lax with how easy they give out driver's licenses & consequently there are truly some idiots on the road that actually DON'T know the laws & probably shouldn't be driving.
