re: New York's New Gun laws. Yay or Nay

Oh yeah. I'm sure there are legit ways around it. But some people aren't that smart. I saw someone try to sell a BOMB on craigslist before.... But he didn't list it like that, I don't remember how he called it, but it was in a long laundry list of other things.

No - that is completely backward actually. The idea of a militia to ensure a free state is free from gov't oppression, you can't rely on a gov't military organization to protect the people from the government.

You said criminals will not follow gun laws. Criminals don't follow any laws, that's why the smurf they're criminals. Laws don't stop criminals from doing jack smurf, so should we just not have them?

All I need is to know the right person to talk to, which wouldn't be that hard to find, the right amount of money, and I can have an illegal gun, bought off the street, quicker then I could go to my local giun shop and buy one legally. I won't have to drive very far, and surely not anywhere near Mexico.

That was in relations to what I said. I didn't necessarily mean they would have to go to Mexico to get an illegal weapon, but that would be a sure fire way to get one

That wasn't what I was saying. I don't think we should make it harder for law abiding citizens to obtain a weapon, then it already is. Make the punishment harder for those that decide to commit the crime.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Should we restrict the sale of knives? Those are just as harmless as a gun that is in the right hands, but just as deadly in the hands of someone wanting to kill...

I knew you wasn't saying that'd be the only way to get them. I was just stemming off what you said.

More people are killed every year with hammers, than with guns..

Laws are there to punish people & make victims feel like something is done about what happened to them (when there are victims). They don't prevent serious crime & that has been proven over & over & over again. Even capitol punishment has NEVER been shown to reduce crime rates...because criminals do what they do thinking they won't be caught OR they would be smart enough not to do it in the first place. Laws don't make us safer EXCEPT in cases where people who are violent/dangerous are locked up longer, so therefore they are less of a threat to the general populous while imprisoned. Otherwise, laws are only there for AFTER the fact, they prevent almost nothing of any significance. Maybe there are a few teens that don't shoplift because of it or a few people not smoking weed, and maybe other petty offenses, but otherwise, serious crimes aren't prevented via laws. Where someone really wants to do something, they'll find the way to get it done & often much easier than we'd like to believe.

You think a knife is as deadly as an assault weapon?

Do you know how many people can be sprayed with an assault weapon vs how long it would take and how close you'd have to get to stab them?

Ny actually has some pretty strict laws on knives as well.  .

You cannot have ANY knife that is considered ballistic in nature, meaning it's spring assisted.

ETA: So if we are comparing knives to guns, a ballistic knife, is really the equivalent of an assault weapon.

If we want to save lives, we ought to be looking into ways to prevent suicides...as that is the leading cause of injury death in the US.

About 16,000 (a bit higher) are murdered every year
37,000 (mor than twice that) took their OWN lives & many places say that number is grossly low compared to the relaity....

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2207089/56-million-suicide-prevention-programme-launched-study-reveals-Americans-lives-die-car-crashes.html

Suicide is the cause of more deaths than car crashes, according to an alarming new study.
Suicides via falls or poisoning have risen significantly and experts fear that there could be many more unaccounted for, particularly in cases of overdose.

'Suicides are terribly under-counted,' said Ian Rockett, author of the study, published on Thursday in the American Journal of Public Health.
'I think the problem is much worse than official data would lead us to believe. We have a situation that has gotten out of hand.'

The results were compiled using National Center for Health Statistics data gathered from 2000 to 2009.

Researchers noted a 25 per cent decrease in fatal car accidents, medicalxpress.com reported, while deaths from falls rose 71 per cent, poisoning 128 per cent and from suicide 15 per cent.

Really?

I'm not trying to be snarky, or rude in ANY means, while suicide is sad, it is NOT something that can or should be policed.

You are comparing someone consciously taking their OWN life, to someone who WILLING takes the lives of many...

I fail to see how this has ANYTHING to do with the topic at hand..
