I'm having my thyroid removed Friday. I'm very anxious and nervous. Have any of you ever had yours out?? How long were you down for? Was it very painful???

I'm so freaked out. I have to have my entire thyroid removed. I hope it's an easy recovery. I hope you have an easy recovery also.

Yup. Almost one year ago actually. I was down for about two or three days. It took me a month before I was able to talk normally though! I'd try to talk sternly to my kids and my voice would come out as little more than a squeak and they'd laugh at me. The first couple of days are pretty painful because it's hard to keep your neck completely still but they'll give you lots of pain pills to help with that.
Good luck and hope everything goes well!

Thank you! This makes me feel a little better. I'm so nervous. My husband is taking a week off work, and I'm hoping ill be back in action soon. My neck was pretty sore after my biopsy so I know what you mean about keeping your neck still.

You should be good after a week. It'll still be tender but you shouldn't be reaching for pain pills every three hours by then. I think my Dh took 3 days off. It's a very easy and routine surgery so don't worry! My surgeon even had students assist him with mine.

Do you know how long the surgery lasts??? Sorry for so many questions. My pre op appointment is tomorrow, and I can't sleep I'm so nervous. I made a list of questions to ask my doctor. Although I might not need them now. Lol

I asked my dr about radiation, but with all the problems I have with my thyroid he said its probably better to just remove it.

I was told the surgery would last about 60-90 min. plus the time in recovery. I only had the right side removed but was told if both sides had to be removed then it would be an overnight hospital stay.

I have to stay 24hrs after surgery. I have to have both sides removed because of nodules. I do appreciate the replies. I feel a little more at ease. The only other person I know who had there thyroid removed was my grandma. She had hers removed 40yrs ago so it's a lot different. Lol

I'm sure it's much different now, thank goodness! I only had nodules on the right side that turned out benign so I got to keep the left lobe. But now I have hypothyroidism, yay.
