My 5 yr old won't listen, doing bad in school now

posted 15th Jan
Arianna was in the top of her class, ahead of all her peers in kindergarten.

I got her report card today. She's below expectations in almost every area.

Her teacher had a meeting with me and said Arianna will not listen, won't raise her hand, and is a bit defiant when asked to do things.

I NEVER went through terrible 2's or 3's with her, she has JUST recently started acting up.. and I don't know what to do.

I've tried getting to her level to let her know she can't talk back, I've done time outs, she ALWAYS interrupts when adults are talking and no matter what I do, she keeps doing it!

She went from the best in the class to the bottom, and now I need some advice on how to fix this.

Who's your health care insurance? sometimes they'll 100% cover the cost of having someone like a counselor for her to talk to. It might seem silly but sometimes having that person to talk to and vent to and steer in the right direction is the best thing you can have on your side.

is it possible she is bored in her class? Seriously my little brother was too smart for the things they were teaching and he started acting up because of it.

I can only assume there's a trigger to her behaviour... Maybe extra stress or maybe she's being bullied?

I went here and got some behavior charts for my girls. We didn't do terrible 3's or 3's either. They are now 4 and one is more defiant than the other. I list the 4 things they need to work on. At the end of the day if they have done a good job (obviously you have to make room for a little oops during the day, just not consistant) I put a sticker in the column. If there are any empty squares I take a privledge or a toy. There is no reward for getting all their stickers. The stickers are the rewards. KWIM?

I think it's a phase, my niece went through the same thing at school. She stopped doing her homework and was acting like she didn't know how to do it. She was constantly lying to her teacher and mom. It was tough to work through.

Find out who she hangs out with in her class, that could be a connection, and maybe just give her some extra attention. That was the issue with my niece. She is one of 4 kids and they never get that one on one time with mommy and daddy. Not saying you don't give your kids attention. But maybe just try squeezing in a bit more. OVER praise her when she does something good. Try not bringing a lot of attention to the bad behavior and over praising the good behavior.

Me and her dad are in the middle of a divorce, and bullied I don't think so, she's kinda a bully herself...

Dean was exactly like this last year, it got worse... to point he was kicked out of a private school,
He argues with teachers,
Very defiant,
Thinks bad about himself,
Is resentful and wants revenge when he's in trouble,
Won't take responsibility

He tested into the school he got kicked out of, for 1st grade and was ahead of the ciriculum for that grade, he was there for 1 freaken month, they had him in every kind of tutor lab they had because he started playing dumb and refused to do any work,

He has odd and adhd...   we put him on meds, he is about 80-90% better... he's still having some bad days but he's improved sooo much, it used to take 3 hours to do maybe 3 sheets of homework... now with meds and counseling, it takes 20 mins...

Having the exact same problem with my son. We have a referral for an evaluation to see if he has ADHD, ODD, etc. I just keep putting it off hoping he'll snap out of it. I'm in denial... heh.
