cord pulsing and other ?
posted 15th Jan
I've been reading birth plans...
A lot of then say they would like the cord to stop pulsing before being clapped or cut. What does that benefit?
Also a lot of them have they would rather tear than get an epis(idk how to spell sorry)
As for delaying testing, does that include that apgar test thing?
I'm just asking how these are better? Idk the right word for what I'm asking i guess. Just kinda clueless

Apgar testing is to rate the baby when it is born 0/1/2 on color, responsiveness... Those things so there is no reason to delay that. Episiotomy is when the doctor cuts you because the baby is going to tear you or there is a chance of it. The cord to stop pulsing is because of the nutrients from the placenta to the baby and there are some things that that last few seconds is very beneficial.

Cord pulsating is because so much blood is left in the planta if the cord is cut right away. The pulsating lets as much blood transfer to the baby as possible, reducing jaundice. And low iron. Etc.
Tears heal better, if you even tear at all.
Not apgar testing that I know of. But if you aren't at risk for STD's and things... You can wait for the initial vaccines or eye drops for a couple of hours at least. Until you get an initial nursing session in ( if you plan on breast feeding). Basically letting LO adjust in as non invasive way possible.

I decided to tear vs being cut because they could have cut me and me not need it. Or they could have cut me too much or not enough. I tore a little but it wasn't too bad. I'm not sure about delayed cord cutting.

I had 40 stitches from my episiotomy.
I really don't ever want another one.

Gotttt it thanks!
So the apgar they can do while baby is on my chest right? Im hoping for a vbac, and very hopeful that will help me successfully breastfeed this time.

You will probably have to be pushy and repetitive about what you want to happen. Be prepared to make your wants known. Also, talk with your OB before hand. They might have protocol they have to follow, but you can discuss it with your DR.

I wish they would have delayed cutting the cord when Allison was born. She got jaundice so bad that she was on one of those billy bed things for 2 days.
My doctor would have never gone for that though. She wanted to be in and out as fast as possible.

Total bullsmurf. As patients we have to know our rights and demand for them to be met. Rediculous is what that is.
