Graves.

posted 15th Jan
Today I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. I am a little shocked but not really surprised. I have lost a huge amount of weight very recently and I feel very sick. I was hospitalized this weekend with my heart rate at about 200 and it was VERY scary. I have to take lots of meds a day and thinking it would probably be best to try and wean my 14+ month old. I think that is the saddest part. The meds are "safe" right now but probably in the very near future I will have to have surgery to remove my thyroid.

Anyone with advice who has dealt with this?

i'm sorry ):
my boyfriend has Graves Disease, he was on meds for quite a while and then they took him off. i know when he gets sick he has iron and potassium deficiencies, so make sure you take your meds and vitamins.
did the doctor say it would affect the baby if you continued to breastfeed?

..though i'm sure they're some crazy pills, Graves is a form of cancer i'm pretty sure.

It is an autoimmune problem. My doctor didn't say the C word..........

the antibodies are attacking my thyroid. How did your bf stop taking meds? I was told i will be on them forever.

everything i've read says that it needs lifelong medication.
his excuse is "i've finished treatment" .. basically meaning, they made me feel like a zombie so i stopped taking them. he promised once we can afford medical insurance he'll go back on them.

now i'm not trying to advocate anything here, but since he stopped he's been self-medicating and has never had an issue. i guess the way his doctor described it, he used the C word..but he also has ITP.. i dunno lol

My brother was just recently diagnosed with Graves disease. They tried him on different medications to bring his Thyroid levels down, but it didn't work. He was maxed out on the dosage of medicine. So it was either yesterday he went in to drink some nuclear medicine and then has to go in to have a radioactive dye treatment thing to kill off his Thyroid completely since they weren't able to manage it.

He had the same symptoms. Massive weight loss, feeling real sick, rapid hearbeat. The works. Not surprising he got it, Autoimmune disorders run in my family

Hope you feel better!

Mom mom has Hypothyrodism as well. I had my levels tested a couple years back, and so far so good.
