"I think public schools should be seen for what they are - a form of government welfare. It should be no different than food or fuel assistance."

Wow, lets make one more thing that the less fortunate get to be looked down on for   That lady sounds insane.

Um, Well I am a certified teacher in Texas. (Not currently teaching.) What needs to change for the public school system is what NCLB gave us. School systems that are based on standardized testing....

This is along the same lines of what dumbass Ann Romney said during her 'the view' interview.

There would be a lot more uneducated & undereducated people if schools were more expensive than they are now. Yes it 'free' yet registration for my Kindergartner was $80 not including the $40 of supplies I was required to buy. That's super cheap & I paid it with out complaining. That doesn't include the property taxes that go straight to the schools.

I bet if she got her way, and only poor people had public education, she'd start in on a new rant along the lines of:

"Poor people should only be able to take checkbook balancing math, not algebra or calculus. I'm responsible enough to homeschool my kid and HE doesn't get taught calculus, why should a poor kid get to learn it for FREEEEEE?"

I have seen more extreme views. I know one guy who calls public school "government indoctrination centers".

I put my kids in private at around 18 months then they stay there til 1st grade, my son has adhd and odd, the dr kept telling me to put him in public because they have better resources to handle him, hes been in for a month and I can't stand it... I pay taxes, for these kids to have an education, in whatever language they speak at home, their parents are driving same cars as me when I had to bust my ass in school and work, and they can't even match their clothes?? They can afford that smart phone and coach bag, but they can't afford to put in a lil money to the school???

Even for halloween and xmas I was the only dumbass to show up with goodie bags for all the kids, I felt so bad, the teacher said no1 does that, I'm like   but there 7??? If I'm showing up with pizza and candy bags when my kids are in highschool, I can see where people are shocked... lol

I've also heard this.

I'm not a...."militant homeschooler"   I'm not a fan of our public schools in our area, and so we've made a different choice for our family. I don't really care if it works for someone else's family. I've never heard someone come from this point of view though.

I went to a private school in middle school, then went back to a public school for high school. Not because we couldn't afford it, but because all the private schools were religious and we were not.

I do think we shouldnt have to pay taxes for public school if we homeschool though. We already pay for our own supplies and books and they don't have to pay for my kids in public school.

I've been reading about a bunch of proposed tax credits for homeschoolers....but most have major stipulations like if you follow their curriculum and stuff. I need to look into it more.

I'm not militant either, I just think its the best option for most kids but especially special needs kids who would otherwise just be shuffled through the system.
