My 4 year old son is blind in 1 eye

My 4 year old son has a lazy eye. The ophthalmologist said his vision in that eye is 20/200 which is legally blind. He has 20/20 in his other eye. He wears glasses but there isn't anything we can do to fix his vision because he has an underdeveloped optic nerve .So he pretty much is wearing glasses to protect his good eye. I was wondering if anyone has a child with this or is blind in one eye themselves can tell me how it has affected your life. I am feeling pretty sad right now and I just want my son to be able to live a normal life and do all the things other kids can do  

I'm legally blind in my right eye. I can still see but barely. It's lazy too. I wear contacts because with glasses, I have no peripheral vision and therefore, can't drive or anything. Other than having to pay $350 a year for the contacts and wear them 24/7 it really doesn't affect me that much.

Then one of the biggest things you can do right now is teach him not to look at it as a disability

Oh man this freaks me out! My son has an eye appointment on the 6th because he has a lazy eye. I'm scared to find out what his vision is in that eye.

Also, my son has strabismus[where one eye turns in] and has to have an operation to fix it otherwise it will affect his vision in the future. Not looking forward to it.   He's 3 1/2.

That is my goal. We are getting him surgery to straighten his eye but unfortunately it won't help his vision any.

No problem. You caught it early which is the best thing. I wasn't able to get it treated until I was 14. When I put on my glasses for the first time I was like   lol. I can't believe I spent 14 years barely seeing my hand in front of my face.

I have extremely poor vision. My myopia is at about -9.5 diopters per eye, which would be about 20/1100 vision. It's pretty much been terrible my whole life, and my eyes are too weak to wear contacts, or to be a very good candidate for laser eye surgery.

With that being said though, I lead a very normal life with corrective lenses. I just have a few restrictions when driving (can't really drive at night), and swimming is an interesting ordeal since I don't want to wear my glasses swimming. It has instilled a certain level of caution into me, since I am afraid of getting hurt, and have a few rather irrational fears due to my poor eyesight.

Being subjected to familiar environments though, I can navigate myself around the house without my glasses! It really isn't a disability.

Don't be scared! I had a lazy eye as a child and it was completely fixable. my vision is fine and my eye is straight. The best thing you can do is catch it early and it looks like you did.

My doctor said the surgery is just day surgery and it takes about a half hour. I'm sure he will do great

That's what DS's doctor said too. But it just makes me so nervous.   I want to catch it early though. I don't want DS to have any of the problems I have. Unfortunately he's going to need glasses no matter what, poor vision runs in both DH and my family.

yea my son will need glasses his whole life. I had a lazy eye as a child and I guess its pretty strongly hereditary. My husband has 20/10 vision so hopefully our daughter has his vision instead of mine lol
