DH is gunshy.

About 4 years ago, when DH graduated college, we planned on moving wherever his airline mechanic job would take us. We ended up finding a foreclosed home in our area for a STEAL, and ended up buying it and staying instead. From there was marriage, kids and a job-which kept us here. This entire time, I've been wanting to move.
I'm not happy with our area-our state really. I want something different. I don't want to work in mills anymore, I want to be a SAHM and to grow my photography business so that I can do it fulltime. If we stay here-it'll never happen because DH can't get a good paying airline job in our area. If we move, he'd make better money, I'd get unemployment for a lengthy time while I advertise my photography, and we'd rent our house out as a duplex. We'd do so much better and I think we'd be happier.
So-DH lost his job in August and has been on unemployment since, with little luck job wise. He's applied across the country but hasn't heard much back until last week. A call came in from Ohio for a phone interview, and he's already digging up the bad possibilities. He'll say 'I dont want to move because it's a pain to move all that stuff', 'I don't want to move because if I find I better job back here, we'd have to move inc from his friends and out of school.', 'If this job doesn't have room to advance, I'm not sure I'll want it', etc.
I just wanna punch him in the head. Like what the smurf are you waiting for. I work in a smurfing mill and jobs are slim, and jobs in my field are being moved out of the country faster than hell. With his degree, we could go anywhere.
I don't understand what is really holding him here, and I'm so frustrated about it. I've supported his dreams and I feel like I'll never get to completely fulfill mine.
someone tell me they can relate...

My husband jumps the gun all the time. He took a transfer from AZ to MT without thinking fully and it nearly cost us everything. Idiot. lol

He's probably just scared of change. It's really uncertain to move to another state, it'd scare the crap out of me!

Moving away from everything you know can be extremely scary.
Can you get unemployment if you just quit?

It is the perception of security that is probably making him reluctant to move. Even though the fact may be that the opposite is true, he feels safe where he lives now, even if the job situation is worsening.

No- I don't think so. I know my Aunt was able to quit her job and get unemployment because of childcare issues. I guess she exhausted all of her options in that area, even talked to higher ups about a different schedule. Since she couldn't do anything-she was able to collect.

I do understand it, but I guess I see the opportunity to rise much greater than the risk to fail. It just sucks...

That's crazy because typically you have to be able to work to collect. So of she quit due to childcare, how was she able to work.. Ya know?
You gotta have a REALLY good reason to quit and then be able to collect.
I've not experienced this same situation BUT Josh is very similar, he didn't want to move- any of the 3 times we did.. He disnt think we could buy our home.. He would never apply for a different/new job if he wasn't losing his current one and even then, he WANTS to stay home w the kids and collect. I've always had to be the one to push him/ do it/ make the first couple steps.. Do the hard work and he followed, basically.

It would be so exciting to move to a new place!! But also bet scary! I'd just be reassuring and understanding and I'm sure he will warm up to it. He may also be nervous to be the bread winner again. Lots of changes are hard.
DH and I are moving to the Chicago area as soon as we're done with school, I can't wait!

My husband and I will be moving to georgia in the next 2 months and even though I am scared to do it, I know it will better my families lives. We tried moving out there 2 years ago this month and it was bad, we ended up coming back a week later. All you can really do is let him decide on his own, do not make him feel like he has no choice or it will lead to a bad situation and he will not only be angry with you, he is more likely to find any opportunity to go back home with or without you. Just sit him down and discuss the pros and cons about moving and what the benefits will be and take it from there.
