re: I feel like they totally dropped the ball

Ugh, I hate hearing stories like this because my son is in a special needs program as well and honestly I don't even send him when his teacher is not going to be there because I'm afraid of someone who doesn't know him well not being able to calm him down or redirect him when he becomes fixated.

Thats sad. They should want to contact you when he is getting crazy.

She hasn't been sick in a long while. And Jacob said he wanted to go so we thought we'd try it.

And unfortunately he suffered.

But I did text his teacher, and said we need to come up with a formal plan about what to do with him when she's sick or can't be there etc...and when to call me, and she thinks it's a great idea.

Last year we didn't send him at all when she was going to be gone.

There is a big problem- if it's not changed in the IEP you have a big issue. They can make ammendments through the year it's just a pain in the tush. And if you are fine with it not being in there the teach can change things but it needs to be docunented - especially for their sake ) (legal issues) but if there is no meeting with EVERYONE you run into this- it's very possible the principles did not know the newer changes.
As far as the suspension. A Behanioral IEP changes the schools disciplining action for him. Especially since he uses it as a way to leave. ( or has)
And yes they really should have called you- but without everyone being in the same page it is hard to know exactly what to do. Get it in writing get it set up so this absolutely cannot happen again.

I am sorry you guys have to go through this. It sucks- I honestly know how bad it sucks.

Yeah I'm texting with the teacher. She said that it looks like this happened.

That yes he had a bad morning, which Jacob says apparently was made worse by lunch because he was late to lunch and was afraid he wouldn't be able to have recess so he just wanted to immediately go there and that he would eat lunch at the end of the day.

He had little ups and downs according to the teacher's aide(the principal said it was larger outbursts) afterwards, which was made far worse by the time it got to the end of the day and decided he couldn't leave school without eating lunch. Which he wasn't going to get. Then it exploded.

She said the principal thinks of it more as when does it get to a suspension level. Yes it's supposed to be that they're supposed to notify me when it gets to the point of no return, but not everyone knows that.

She said that the vice principal does normally take him to lunch, which was a big red flag, he also didn't tell the teacher's aide that he didn't eat, another red flag. So she didn't know. Apparently this teacher's aide knows him better, so she's going to switch things up and she says when she's gone that this teacher's aide will be assigned to him since she knows him better and that she is going to have me sign something saying that this teacher's aide will notify me when things get bad, and she knows him better so she'll know when that is, because she works with him everyday.
