not wanting formula

posted 14th Jan
My baby is not a toddler yet but she is almost 11 months. The past few days she will hardly drink her bottles. I tried her sippy cup but she is just not interested in the formula anymore. She will drink a little here and there but not as much as before. She has been eating a lot more food also and she drinks water once or twice a day a few oz each time. Is this normal? A nurse at her doctor's office said it is normal and to just cut back on the water but she really doesn't have that much. The only big change is her eating a lot more food now. Is there a way I can get her to take more formula or should I let her be? I just want other opinions. Thank you!

If she's eating solids it is normal for her to eat less formula, but she does need it till one.

My daughter stopped formula at 10.5 months. Her doc told me to go ahead and give her cows milk since she was refusing formula.

Ok thank you. Yeah I don't want to switch her to milk until one. I want to make sure she gets all the nutrition she needs.

Have you tasted formula? I have no idea how my daughter stomached it when she did when I couldnt BF lol

Have you tried adding rice cereal to it? I had to do that long before the 11 month mark because she would choke on the formula being so thin.

Many people told me that but I would rather not unless there was nothing else I could do. The nurse told me to wait until after her 1 year appointment.

LOL yes I have. I was getting her rice cereal and for some odd reason licked the spoon after mixing it and it was awful!! I have never added it to her bottle though. I heard it was a bad idea.

Cut back on water and she'll eventually take more formula. She's almost one though so I wouldn't freak if she doesn't get as much as she used to get. Just encourage it. As long as she's getting a multi vitamin and varieties of foods, I wouldn't be too worried. She might be ready to switch to milk or something.

Her doctor told me to do it when I mentioned the choking. It's only a bad idea when they are newborns or infants, since she is already on it without the formula it wouldn't hurt anything

Ok. She did very well today. Maybe she was just having a few hungry days more for food than her bottles.

Yeah, I honestly wouldn't worry too much being that she's almost a year. If she was under 6 months, then I'd be concerned. I know this is going to sound horrible, but I wish I would have pushed more food/solids upon my son at 6-8 months, There were days I wouldn't even offer him foods and he was fine with that...he loved his bottles/formula. It took us until 16-18 months to get him on "real food" and off of formula/bottles because we delayed him eating a good amount of food for quite a while.

So yeah, find a multivitamin for her age...I know Poly-Vi-Sol by Enfamil is a good one...we used to mix this into his juice or formula and he never knew he was drinking it. We started this as soon as he turned 6 months. And I'd push a bottle or two of formula (maybe nap and bedtime) and not worry too much . She's getting bigger.

Ok. Are the vitamins something I could find at Walmart? I was going to see if her doctor could give us some. Yeah my LO started on all table food at about 8.5 months. Now she eats tons. Even more than my friend's 16 month old and she is still small lol.

Absolutely. That's where we got ours, Walmart. Target will have them too and even other grocery stores might. I'd check a drug store or Walmart first though. They're purple in color (the box/bottle) and called Enfamil Poly-Vi-Sol.
