Repost about breastfeeding

posted 14th Jan
I posted this a while ago but didn't get any responses. I'm desperate otherwise I would repost.

Please excuse the horrible typing I'm on my phone. My son was born on 12/1 , I supplemented at first and all was fine my supply was great. He is tounge tied as well but can still latch pretty well. We both had thrush about 2 weeks ago and he started having some latching problems but still managed. I started supplementing again because he started to want to eat constantly but I couldn't handle the pain by the end of the day. Now I am in the position where I am not satisfying him not to mention the thrush is coming back. My question is should I stop formula all together even though I clearly don't have enough milk, or do I just continue as is? I'm so lost on this. I feel defeated and did everything the lc said. I feel like I really let this little guy down. Any advice?

He needs to be on the boob to build your milk supply back up, so i'd stop the formula. You can also try mothers milk and fenugreek to help with your supply until it regulates.

If you stop supplementing and nurse nurse nurse you will make more milk. Sounds like you can have a damn good supply if your milk came in good even while supplementing. You cando this! Get thrush medication for you and baby and get him on the boob

Stop ALL supplementing until you get your milk back up, otherwise you will keep yourself in the vicious cycle your in.

As for thrush, get yourself gentian violet and treat yourself (boobs) and it will xfer to the baby's mouth and kill the yeast. Be sure to apply vaseline to the babys chin and cheeks so the violet doesnt stain.

Thank you SO much for answering! So it's ok to let him go hungry for that long. Or would pumping along with his comfort nursing be better?

His comfort nursing will signal to your body to make more milk but pumping too should be fine if he gets uber frustrated . Just have something stimulating.

Well i mean he'll be on the boob for what feels like 24/7, your boobs are never empty so he'll have food, but he has to build your supply back up which is what you want. If you have a pump you can pump one side while he's nursing on the other and then switch. It will build your supply and once that happens it'll take about a week or so to regulate.

The bottle I got was only like 6 dollars. Blessed thistle is good too the lactation consultant told me. If you can try pumping too to get your supply up.

Put that baby on those boobs and only the boobs!

Your breasts are forever producing milk... So put him on one side. Let him nurse and nurse and nurse for as long as he wants. When he fusses and acts like its empty, put him on the other. When he fusses, switch him back. He might do this ALL NIGHT, but it'll build your supply! A lot of it is just comfort nursing as well, so it won't matter, after hours and hours, if your boobs are empty or full lol. It's just stimulation and you need it!

You can do it mamma!

You are never going to build up more milk if you are supplementing. I was worried about my supply just like you, I pumped exclusively for two months for my son and it had a bad effect on my supply and when I managed to get my son to latch on after two months my supply was really low.. He used to get really sleepy at first cos I think he was worn out and not getting much milk, I stopped watching the clock and getting stressed by the situation, I used to leave him there for hours sometimes so after he had fallen asleep he would comfort suck. I always pumped after every feed, and don't measure how much your getting, it doesn't matter if nothing is coming out just keep pumping for at least 10 minutes each side (pumps are not nearly as efficient as a baby) this will trick your body into producing more milk. I also used to wake my baby up every two hours and put him on and the majority of the time he would feed . They showed me in hospital to ball my fist and massage in circles an inch from the areola around my breast, this really helped my flow. Lastly, when I was bf I would look at my baby and get a good wiff of his scents and imagine milk flowing out of my breast into his mouth. This is a really long message I know but all these things really helped my supply. Lastly, forget about the housework, my other half works full time and I told him he now was in charge of doing the laundry and washing up as me and baby were going to spend the week together bonding and bf and nothing else!
