missing too many days of school?

posted 14th Jan
what does the school normally do when a student misses too many days of school? what if they are legitimately sick all those days? my two girls are in 3rd and kindergarten and I am worried that they have missed the max amount this year. (its 10 days in a whole school year) because they have had a quite a few sick days (stomach bug, pink eye, fever) i have four kids so they get germs from 4 different places and share with each other. i know that my son may get dropped from his headstart prek program because hes been sick the past week with a stomach bug (vomiting and diarrhea) and i dont know what happens to the older kids. any advice is great. and also my kids' school doesnt not accept doctors notes at all anymore so they take all missed days just that missed days and not really excused liek doctors notes should be. (and my girls grades are still pretty great. just oldest has a D in spelling but mostly B's in other classes.)

In our district, if a student does not have a doctors note or a legitimate excuse (for example, if they take like 3 sick days in a row, mom calls in every day - it only counts as one absence), once they hit 10 days, they are put through the truancy process and parents have to go to "court" to explain why their child isn't in school when they are supposed to be.

If they are behind in school work, they will fail unless they make it up. Sometimes the parents are contacted and warned. That's how it worked when I went to school, they had a strict no child left behind policy.

In Arkansas, they usually inform the prosecuting attorney and you get a letter in the mail asking you to appear in court.

But if you go to the school and explain to the principal, maybe you can work something out?

My nephew has to be checked out early twice a week or something for therapy..and his mother got it okay-ed and the principal doesn't count him absent.

Depends on the state and the school district. I would get a policy of the allowed absences as well as doctor notes to document that the kids were legitimately sick all of the days they were out. Worst case you will have to go to court and possibly jail if the district decides they have missed too much school.

My child's school district calls the abuse hotline, to turn the parent in for Academic Abuse. If you have Dr's notes they are considered "excused".

After you miss 15 days, unexcused, the student automatically fails.

How can they not take doctors notes anymore? I thought they were legally obligated to take them. What if a child was really sick and had to have long hospital stays? UGH I hate the school systems anymore, but I wont get into all that lol.

Anyways, are you sure its 10 for the whole year? Ours says something like that but then it explains it more and says more than 10 per semester will have truancy charges brought up.

I hate the school system too, that is why I am home schooling so I won't have to deal with it!

I have seriously considered it and in the last month I have been even more so.

i dont know but i have our school districted liked on facebook so i can get the big news and it was announced last year that they would no longer accept doctors notes as excuses for absenses. and i am not sure 100% about the 10 day thing but that is what i believe that letter they sent home last year said. I am thinking about calling the school tomorrow and see if i can get some accurate information.

And like my DH brought up the other night, why do parents get in trouble if their kids are not educated? I mean in general most parents would send their kids to school or home school but why are they forced to get their kids educated when it should be the parents choice. Then the things like OP posted with missing school. I understand public miss out on money if kids do not attend but the fact the parent gets in trouble for a child missing school or not accepting medical reasons to miss is just beyond me.

I hope you can get something figured out because IMO the school district is just stupid if they won't accept medical reasons for missing school, unless they want even more students to get sick and miss school...

it is stupid but also some parents cant afford to take their kids to school for every stomach bug they get. my daughter got a doctor's appointment when she had pink eye because its contagious and i found out she also had an ear infection but when they have vomiting and diarrhea i dont normally take them to the doctor unless its so severe they have high fever or cant keep anything at all down. but i also dont send them to school til its cleared up you know? so i wouldnt have doctors notes for EVERY single missed day but still... this is ridiculous. it used to be 4 days every nine weeks that have to excused and 4 unexcused. so like 8 days every nine weeks could be missed before they start crap. and then i heard it was 10 days in the whole year i was like omg

I hardly ever missed school, same for my siblings so I can't comment too much on our school district's policy but I think it was some where along the lines of 10 unexcused missed days for the year and I don't think a limit on doctor note excused. Not sure about now even though my brother is in 6th grade.

I cannot imagine why they would not allow doctor's notes, unless they had too many that were fraudulent?

I don't take my kids to the doctor for everything either, I don't think we should have to. I hope you get it figured out. Maybe try the schools website, I know ours has the handbooks on there. I just read through ours and its 7 unexcused absences in a semester (which is odd because they have trimesters now lol) If I call him in as sick it is excused. They have 10 excused absences before you have to bring in doctors notes for them.

But it varies because my 11yo is in middle school and he is only allowed 4 absences per trimester without a note, if he misses more than 4 they give him saturday school to make it up.
