Severe itching all over

posted 14th Jan
I am currently 24w4d pregnant with my 4th child. Since I was about 14w, I have been having itching. It started behind my knees and continued to get worse. I have not changed anything in my routine, except have switched laundry detergent since the itching started. My mom looked stuff up and we thought it could be cholestasis, however the past two days I have took some Benadryl for my cold (was running a stuffy nose) and the itching has went away. Today I have not took any medication and the itching has returned. It is all over my body..you name it..it itches..and its severe to the point it looks as if someone has beat my thighs and chins black and blue. Anyone else have this problem or know what it could be? In need of some serious help! I've tried to mention it to my OB but she just referred me to a dermatologist saying it was probably nothing. The itching is driving me insane!

If its suddenly worse then i would phone the hospital/Drs for advice it can be dangerous, my skind gets itchy but i have been told severe or all over itching needs to be assessed x

Meggymama, I had a doctor appointment today and attempted to talk to my OB about it and she blew it off as just itching due to being pregnant. I went to the hospital last Tuesday and sat in the lobby for almost 2 hours and when I finally was took back to a room, I was told to undress and wait for the doctor (who did not come in for more than an hour). Didn't see a nurse or no one. When I called the nurse in to see how much longer it was going to be she said " there are 3 more people ahead of you unless more come in EMT. You have waited this long it won't hurt you to keep waiting". So I left. I've called labor and delivery and no one seemed to know anything about itching.

sounds crappy, have you tried an oatbath? if you fill the bath as normal but get a clean sock or tights and fill them with a cup or two of oats and tie it off, place it in the bath whilst its running, it should help calm you down, Are your eyes nice and white, severe itching can sometimes be a sign of liver damage so check them too. I hope its 'just' an annoying itch for you x

Thanks. I looked it up but I don't think that is it. There is no rash. Just constant itching that has only went away when I take the benadryl. I've tried lotions, baby oils, aveeno bath, etc and nothing seems to help. I've even tried calamine lotion. Only reason I took benadryl was for my stuffy nose and noticed it helped my itching. No rash. No bumps. Just itching that started behind my knees, went to my thighs, then chins..then eventually all over my body. I scratch to the point (I guess its from scratching) I bruise. Under my boobs and on my belly there are even little red spots but they are not raised. It looks like "blood" spots (best I can describe it.)

I also am hoping its just an annoying itch. My eyes are nice and white. However, I did have other signs of the rare liver disease that only occurs in pregnancy. I'm not sure though. :/

If you're worried you must call even if you have to phone 1387983 times you should not be ignored. I am the most nervous pregnant woman and I probably call EPAU once or twice a month Its what they are there for.

I would get the blood work done to check about it being cholestasis. I had that with my last pregnancy and my doctor didn't believe anything was wrong either until I had it checked. it's a pretty serious issue and the only relief you'll get comes with the medicine, which is also critical for the well-being of your baby. My itching was all over but the worst parts were my ankles, legs and wrists. Also, certain foods made it worse like greasy or hot foods. good luck!

you could always get scent free laundry detergent and try cetaphil body wash.. it has no perfumes in it so it won't worsen the itch... def gotta agree with other ladies to see if you can get blood work done to figure it out.

Thank you all for your input!! I really appreciate it and will be seeing a dermatologist soon (recommended by my doctor) and will be asking them for the blood work so I can make sure. But we shall come to the bottom of this sooner or later, even if it is my detergent   Thanks again ladies!

My MIL said she had horrible "internal" itching throughout both of her pregnancies. She said it was like an itch right under your skin that scratching wouldn't help. No Dr. believed her either. :/

Poor girl, I understand. My itching was like rip- your- skin- off- and- scratch- your- bones kind of itching. :/ I had my gallbladder taken out though so thank goodness it can't come back with this pregnancy.
