Children & mature video games
posted 14th Jan
Do you think it's ok for a child to play adult video games?
Does it depend on the maturity level of the child?
Is it a no-go regardless until a certain age?
Is it ok in incriments? With supervision? Can they even just watch it?
Just curious as what the range of opinions are.. GO

I don't really consider it to be okay for my kids. I do allow them video game time, but-games more along the lines of Little Big Planet, Plants vs. Zombies, Angry Birds, Sly Cooper---more cartoonish games.
I wouldn't &don't allow realistically violent games, and if I'm going to play an adult oriented game, I do so when they're in bed or not around.

No I wouldn't let my son play those games at 8 and 9 yrs old like alot of parents do. I would let my son play when he's an older teenager.

Well, I wouldn't even let my husband play games in front of our daughter who is now 3. He did a couple times and she now has extreme anxiety about any games on the playstation or xbox. I had to tell my dad he can't play those games around her either. I won't let my son play "mature" games until he's much older.

Depends...
Mum used to hate me any my middle brother playing games like Resident Evil (we would borrow them from friends, lol she wouldn't buy them) and we were like.. I dunno, over 10, early teens? But we were also mature, knew it was just a game, etc. but we were also not really scared, there were kids the same age who couldn't play them for that reason.
It really depends on the kid, I think.

These responses are basically what I expected.
I'm curious because my step son (who is almost 7) play Black Ops/Black Ops 2 with DH allll the time lol too much if you ask me. DH used to play at night but we found out my step son would sneak out and watch because he was so interested. After him getting punished for the whole sneaking around thing, we decided that maybe he could handle it & let him try. At first I had a problem with him playing that type of game at his age, but I'm starting to back down. He enjoys it a lot and understands that it's just a game, etc. etc. (that has been made very clear) and now, he's kicking DH's butt! (which I secretly love) lol they really bond over it actually..
Idk.. I still feel funny about it, but I only get so much say. It's obviously regulated and he doesn't play as often as I made it sound earlier.. I was just wondering if any other kids around that age play similar games. My guess is no lol

Yeah I personally wouldn't be ok with that. But with the way my husband is I probably will try to keep my son away from video games for as long as possible.

No. I used to play a lot on a big multi-player game and often thought that there was no way kids should play.
I think it's irresponsible.

There's a reason that games have a ratings system, same as movies. I don't even allow DD to watch movies that are graphic or violent or have sex. I sure as hell wouldn't allow a video game.
When she's old enough for real video games, she can play age appropriate games. I know there are plenty of them out there.

I'm not a fan of video games. I grew up without them and as far as I'm concerned, they're not necessary for my daughter to own either. I don't plan on ever having a game console in the house, but if she wants one when she's a teen, that's up to her. But really, I don't see the point in blowing a ton of money on a bunch of graphics....I'd rather buy her things she can build with her hands etc We don't even watch tv, most days the tv is never on, so it wouldn't be a good use of money for us....we're not very technical people LOL However, I might get her a leapfrog eventually, but I'm afraid she'd break it...she's an absolute hulk

I am a bad Mom, I let my kids (14 and 7), play COD and Halo.
I take the mike out so they cant hear all the cussing from the other players.
I was pretty proud when my son got a nuke on MW2.

Hahah aw, I was hoping there would be a 'bad mom' out there! I am so not familiar with the game but DH gets pretty proud of DS too lol
