Exactly.

I was a pack a day smoker for 13 years. I continued to smoke with my first, though part of my pregnancy I was on NRT due to incarceration for 4 months of the pregnancy. She was small, and it was due in part to all those bad habits- drugs in the beginning before finding out, smoking at the end instead of staying on the patches. My second, I cut down. I quit for a while with NRT again, but about 3/4 of the way through I would have 1-2 cigarettes a day. She was born prematurely, but due to a health condition I have. She DOES have asthma, and I'm certain that the smoking played a part and I feel horrible for it.

This time around, I was told not to quit. I've had seizures in the past from nicotine withdrawl. I have a problem with seizures and life threateningly low blood pressure when I go through substance withdrawl. After cutting back and cutting back through my pregnancy, I finally felt safe enough to just quit. I didn't want the NRT, nor could I afford it, because I want cigarettes out of my life for good.

It can be done. I know it's hard to do. I smoked for 13 years. At some points I was smoking 2-3 packs a day in my life. Every cigarette you don't smoke is a benefit, but remember that every cigarette you do smoke is a danger. Nicotine withdrawl is comparable to heroin/opiate withdrawl in adults and infants alike. At this point, it isn't wise to quit cold turkey, however it would be in your best interest to get into NRT. The ACA has mandated that insurance companies also helpnwith smoking cessation products. If you have medicaid, call 1-800-quitnow and you can get your NRT patches/gum/whatever for free.

im 30 weeks and I smoke, smoked with oth my other kids and they were perfect.. your going to nasty comments on here because people always preach to me. my baby is perfect size and weight. I go to neonatal specialist and he is right on point. if your going to breast feed I suggest quiting soon or at least before u have the baby. its not the best idea to smoke during pregnancy but people not in our situation don't understand how hard it is to quit. also, if u go through withdrawl, so does the baby so if u are going to quit then you should ween off slowly so it doesn't effect your baby

What do you mean by "people not in our situation don't understand how hard it is to quit"? I quit and I didn't even have a baby inside me to motivate me. Nobody is downplaying the fact that it IS hard to quit. What we are suggesting is that as a mother with a child INSIDE of you, mooching off of what you put into YOUR body because it subsequently ends up in THEIR body, that nothing should be TOO HARD to do if it's going to effect them. Even if it was the slightest of chances that your child could be premature with a low birth weight leading to numerous other issues after birth, that slight chance should be enough to make you want to stop or at least cut down to 1 or 2 a day. If you were a heroin addict or crack addict would you still shoot, snort, and smoke your smurf because that smurf is TOO HARD to quit as well? I don't think so. Smurf is hard. We do hard smurf for our kids.

" not in our situation" meaning smokers, and I listen to my doctors not somebody being nasty to somebody asking a question.. and if u go through withdrawls so does your baby. I never said it was smart or a good thing did I.. Nope, but not all babies that are born to moms who smoked during pregnancy have issues was the point I was making. I didn't say how much I smoke nor did I condone it. but why make the girl feel bad.. I honestly don't care what people think. or wouldn't have posted. comparing smoking ciggs to heroin and crack is just dumb..

I honestly don't think anyone would be giving her a hard time about smoking, if she was at least attempting to quit. But she admitted that she hasn't been trying to cut back, and smokes as if there isn't a child inside her, relying on her. Like someone else said, there is a benefit to every cigarette you don't smoke, but you are taking a serious risk with every one that you do smoke. I, and pretty much every other lady here, was a smoker. But despite how hard it is, we quit, or at least cut back considerably. Which would be the wisest thing for her to do, considering her child's health is at risk because of her poor decisions.

It's not dumb. She was comparing quitting other addictive substances to quitting cigarettes and saying you wouldn't do heroin while pregnant just because it's hard to quit.

Thank you. I wasn't putting heroin in the same realm as cigarettes for gods sake. Really? Addiction is addiction and all addictions are "hard". Iwould know, I have 5 years clean. But I still did it!

Do you ever get tired of your own bullsmurf? You could throw all the statistics out there and throw your own parent into the mix. The point is smoking while you are pregnant is the most selfish thing ever..i do not believe the excuses that are being posted.i have soo much stress every day..do you see me lighting up? Deal with it and grow up. Withdrawls from smoking are not like drugs..what a crock bipolar? Haha i have had that since age ten. All i hear is complete bs.oh..lets not forget ..no doctor will ever tell you smoking doesnt effect the baby that was a nice try -.-

Honestly you could put heroin and meth, and crack in the same category as cigarettes. Crack is mixed with a lot of the same chemical cigarettes are mixed with now. Same with heroin and meth... If not MORE. Haven't you seen those commercials or documentaries where they admit cigarettes can be WORSE than all these illicit drugs. Like I said I'll smoke a cigarette and do that to myself. Not my baby though. So yes she very well did, and CAN compare those addictions to cigarettes, cigarettes have already proven to be THE MOST addictive substance to date though I think that's a matter of opinion I smoked for 5-6 years. And I quit on the drop of a dime. But struggled with other things as a teenager that were supposed to be easier to drop. It's dumb to smoke while pregnant I mentioned before just on the fact that SMOKE deprives baby of oxygen alone. Not even adding the nastiness you're allowing your unborn child to take it.

No it's not, really. The same regions of the brain that are activated by heroin are activated by nicotine. The same portion of the brain goes through a crisis when you remove either from their respective addicts. Chocolate activates the same sequence of hormones, which is why heroin addicts and nicotine addicts alike benefit from eating a piece of dark chocolate to help curb their cravings.

Also, nicotine withdrawal is comparable to heroin withdrawal in babies.

In neonates, nicotine withdrawal is as bad as opiate withdrawal, even elicits the same hormonal and neurological response. While I don't agree with smoking while pregnant, I still have to say that you are a smurfing moron if you won't even trust the hard facts proven beyond a reasonable doubt through multiple studies over a span of many years. And while no doctor will tell you that smoking won't effect the baby, it is not at all uncommon for doctors to tell smoking women not to quit cold turkey, especially on the second and third trimesters.
