Breastfeeding/Pumping Help Please

posted 13th Jan
Question for a friend  .

My friend works full time and pumps. She needs to pump 20 oz. a day but hasn't been able to lately.

When she is home during the day, her baby refuses to nurse, only wants a bottle, and will only nurse at night when he is tired. She only has one side that produces well, so she can't pump on one side while she nurses on the other to get more.

Now, she pumps every couple hours at work, and continues pumping for 5-10 minutes after she gets everything to try to increase production. What else can she be doing to be able to pump more???

I wouldn't offer bottles at home at all. Give jumbo choice but to be on the breast. This will keep her supply up. Is she massaging and helping squeeze milk out when she's pumping? Usually you pump until nothing comes out then use your hands to help coax the milk down and out. Does she have pics of her baby to look at while pumping or a video of him crying or nursing?

Thanks   I told her all this so hopefully she can work something out. She's also going to talk to a LLL leader. Her baby's only 3 months so she's bummed about how things are going, she nursed her other two kids for a long time.

She can nurse the baby with a nipple shield at home. For me, because I BF 99% of the time, I wish I had never had to use one. But for her since she mostly pumps, a nipple shield would get the baby to feed from her breast and help her production.

That is a great idea, I never thought of a nipple shield!

It makes them think they're eating from a bottle. I had to start using one after Asher developed a bottle preference after I became engorged. I bet it would work for her.
