It looks like egg whites and will stretch between your fingers. How long it lasts varies, for me it lasts 3-4 days. Once I ovulate it dries up.

It's called egg white cervical mucus for a reason! Clear, stringy, stretchy, slippery. It changes gradually over your cycle, from dry to sticky to slippery to egg white as your body approaches the estrogen threshold required for ovulation. Some women will have it a couple times in their cycle if they almost ovulate then their estrogen dips a little and builds up again. But you usually only have the really stringy stretchy stuff one, maybe two days. It's different for every woman, though.

Ok thanks guys! Our birth control method is me paying attention to when I ovulate which I normally have pains in my side and it hurts during sex and it's around the same time every month. I keep track of it with the My days app... I had clear, stringy, stretchy discharge for 1-2 days and now I am afraid I ovulated 4 days earlier than when I normally do!!   Im not sure if that discharge is normal for me because I havent paid too much attention to my cervical mucus during my cycles in the past... Im a little worried now!

Sounds like fertile mucus to me. Sperm can live 3 to 5 days in it. So you may not have ovulated but could still get pregnant. If you are trying to avoid pregnancy no sex when you have this mucus and wait 3-4 days after it stops. Unless you know you ovulated then wait 24hrs.

You really should. Ovulation pains and such are not a reliable indication of ovulation, whereas cervical mucus, position, and basal body temperature charting are. So if you're serious about avoiding pregnancy, you need to start looking at the signs that are proven effective. Have you ever read Taking Charge of Your Fertility? It's a great book.

we are definitely serious about avoiding it.. I graduate in May with my RN and then we want to buy a house by the end of the year! We don't want to TTC until we are in our own house. I really thought the pains and cramping were me ovulating! We have been using that as a "guide" since last January and we haven't gotten pregnant since...

I will definitely look into that book! The only reason I thought something was up with my cervical mucus was because I am taking my mother/baby nursing class and that is everything we are covering right now. I wiped on Saturday and then it clicked and I was like oh crap!!

Do you have any tips on feeling your cervix? I have always wondered how women have done that!

I'm not saying that it's not you ovulating, just that it's not reliable, because some women will have the pains either before or after ovulation, so it's not exact.
Umm, you just stick a finger or two up there until you find it? It takes a bit to get understand what you're feeling, low, high, soft, firm, open, closed... Oh gtg put the kid to bed.
