Puppy newspaper training?
posted 13th Jan
We just got a new dog, and I'm trying to train her on puppy pads/newspaper, since we live on the second floor, and I want her to be able to use the potty in the middle of the night. She doesn't mind going outside, I just want her to learn on the pads!
Has anyone had any success with this?
Tips? Tricks? Suggestions?
TIA!

ive read it can cause confusion if you teach both.

My SO bought some spray that attracts them to it.

I would just take her outside. It will be easier for her to learn. Their bladders are like the size of a pea right now.

When she starts to go, or you see her acting like she needs to go, put her on the paper. You can pick a phrase that you always say when she goes pee, like hurry up or go pee, and say that whether it's outside or in; eventually she will connect the phrase to the peeing. There will be accidents, but she'll get it in time. Do not punish or treat a dog harshly when she messes on the floor. That will only teach her to fear you and hide it.
Lots of people do the paper training thing. I've never heard of confusion being a problem. Of course, if you're concerned about that, there's always those fake turf pee mats you can buy...

I have also heard it causes confusion. Crate train the puppy at night. They won't pee or poop where they sleep and are confined. Just take them out last thing before you sleep and first thing when you wake up. Also, no water a couple hours before bed.

I didn't use pads even though my rescues came trained with it. The best advice I can give is that if the puppy is peeing somewhere it shouldn't be, move it (while its peering) to the correct spot. Also, try not to scold too much because it could make the puppy think that peeing is wrong. and what worked best for us was we set a timer and every 30 min we took the dog outside. Praise a lot when they are successful!
Lol. We have 3 dogs so I've done this a few times.

as a puppy, yes they will. my puppy peed and pooped in his crate all the time. they can't hold it that long. their bladder is the size of a pea.

I have three dogs, all potty trained perfectly. My Australian cattle dog is 8 months. He was potty trained by 3 1/2 months because I crate trained him as a pup. He doesn't need to be in the crate at night anymore.

And food we stopped 2 hrs before bed and water 20 minutes before bed.

I got my boy at 6 weeks and he didn't have a problem. But I also went to bed at 11 ish and woke about 6

So I SHOULDN'T try to train her to paper/pads? I don't want her to get confused. She's so timid and tender hearted it'd just break her. She's still warming up to us, and I don't want her to think peeing is wrong. I plan on making the bathroom "her room" at night. So, maybe I'll set paper down in there in case she has accidents?

It's ultimately up to you. But I wouldn't, if for some reasons she thinks its okay to pee and poop in the house then she may just do it on the carpet. Or if she isnt confused she could possibly miss the pad. Pee is terribly hard to get out of carpet, the smell. Just take her out often and figure out a situation for the night.
