Her best friend

posted 13th Jan
DD has a stuffed lamb she got for Easter a couple years ago. She loves him. He goes everywhere with her. I hate that I've let her get so attached. I've almost thrown him away but I know she'd be heartbroken. And I'd be a bit heartbroken for her. Normally a snatch him up to wash him while she is distracted. Tonight, she dipped him in ketchup so I grabbed him and put him in the washer with her watching. I explained that this was his bath and he needed one. You'd think I just brutally stabbed him, set him on fire, and pissed on him by her reaction. I feel bad knowing because I let her get this way.   When do kids grow out of needing their comfort objects? She is 2.5.

she is still little!!! i would let her keep him until she is about 4, and when she gets to be old enough u let her know, hey its time for him to get a rest, or its time for him to help another kid. then donate him to goodwill

Some kids never get them. Some last a few months, others years. I've seen 5 year olds with their comfort items still. Just have to know that she needs it for a reason, and to be compassionate and understanding about it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. My sister has a pooh bear that she has been obsessed with her entire life.. My mom finally convinced her to leave it home when she went to college but she's a senior now in college and I'm pretty sure Pooh and her baby blanket are still in her bed at home. I didn't pack away my stuffed animals until I moved out at 18, and I took my baby blanket with me. My son has it now but I'm still super careful with it because it's so sentimental. He also has my favorite dolls and stuffed animals from when I was a kid.

I don't think even Goodwill would want him. He has been VERY well loved. Lol. I couldn't imagine taking him from her now. I just don't know when the time would be appropriate. I want her to keep him forever since he is so special to her.

I just don't want her to take him as her prom date. Lol.

My son will be 6 in a month and still has his blanket. He takes that thing everywhere. The ONLY time he leaves it at home is when he goes to school. He will have nightmares if he doesn't have it at bedtime. I hate that he stills has to have it. But I see no harm in it. My sister is 24 and still has her "silky". She can't sleep without it.

What's wrong with her having a comfort object? That's great. She'll grow out of it on her own. I still have my old lamby that I've had since I was like 3. I gave it to Sera but it still holds some sentimental value to me.

My son is two years old and he is obsessed with his blankie. It was my couch throw blanket and I always snuggled him in it and we snuggled together in it. He over took it and is literally obsessed with it. Its funny because he is so little and the blanket is huge and he drags it everywhere around the house and literally refuses to use any other type of blanket. If you try and touch his blanket or use it he goes ehhh and pulls it away. He wont let anyone touch it or use it. I am the same way I have to literally sneak his blanket away and wash it as fast as possible before he notices it. I do not see a reason to take it from him maybe thats just how I parent but I see nothing wrong with him using it as long as he wants to. I am sure your daughter wont be bringing it to middle school or prom with her so I don't see a problem with her carrying it around with her.

I don't see why it bothers you, what problems does it actually cause?

It depends. My brother still has some stuffed animals and he's 14. (I don't think he ever really had just one thing.)

My bf is 20 and still has his, (its a little pillow from his grandpa) but he had a traumatic experience when he was a kid, therapist said that he's also addicted to the feel of it. He'll probably have it for the rest of his life.

So it depends on a lot of things. Liike its value to her, if she ever goes through a traumatic experience, maybe some day she'll pass it on. My brother and I shared a stuffed dog that used to be my moms when she was a kid. My brother might even still have it.

I still have the teddy bear that I got when I was born, it used to be in my crib, I used to sleep with it, now its in the closet in my sons room (with all my other old stuffed animals that I've kept.)

My son is 4 and he has an ugly red stuffed monkey. It's faded because it's been washed so much. He got it when he was a couple of months old and it's his security blanket. I don't think it has much to do with us 'letting' them get too attached to a stuffed animal. It is just a normal part of childhood. What i've noticed is as my son gets older, he needs 'yucky' (he couldn't say monkey originally) less and less. Now he just sleeps with him. I would never even consider throwing Yucky out. I can't imagine doing that to a 2 year old.

My daughter will be 3 next month and she still has a security blanket. She HAS to have it for naptime/bedtime and if we go somewhere she just has to bring it. Lol. She will also freak out like that when its time for it to be washed
