Tampons after medication abortion? (TMI)

posted 13th Jan
I posted on here a few weeks back looking for advice on whether or not to have an abortion. After reading through all of the responses I decided to go ahead with it. I chose the medication abortion and took the pills.

It's been 8 days since the abortion and we know it was successful. Now I'm wondering if I can switch to tampons from maxi pads? They told me 2 weeks, but I've developed a serious rash all over down below from the adhesive and the "plasticky" material on the bottom of the pads. It's burning and itching something fierce.

I called the clinic and they said to wait another week but I've looked online and found a lot of clinics that say you only have to wait 1 week instead of 2.

I'm no longer passing clots and the blood never makes it to the pad, it's only visible when I wipe and occasionally a rather gross long string of "snot-like" blood. Any input would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

try a pantiliner instead of a pad. i wouldn't be sticking anything up there yet.

I would try just using a wash cloth to catch any possible blood until you hit that two week mark. Or if the bleeding is so minimal don't wear anything at all.

regardless of your output hun the tampon thing is about infection more than anything but you can always go with a cloth pad or as I do I leave the pad in without taking the stickers off if I have to wear one cause I hate the sticky part

If you are not bleeding heavily or passing clots you should be okay.
I know after mine I randomly passed clots a few weeks later before starting my period again. I use cloth pads tho.

Use some cloth or a pantiliner. Don't put anything inside you yet, there is still risk for infection.

I wouldn't. The reasons they tell you to wait are small but significant risks I would not take. Like the other poster, cloth pads are wesome, but even so - go to a healthfood store & buy natural disposables. They will NOT irritate you. Also, make sur eyou are rinsing the area with water, take a sitz bath if possible with Epsom salts & blow dry the area dry after with a blow drier. The drier you can keep the area the faster the irritation will go away.

Wait for your next cycle. It's more about trying to decrease your chances of infection, as opposed to what you're still passing.

If you aren't bleeding too much then I don't see why a panty liner isn't an option. You really don't need an infection right now.

Can you just rip up an old shirt & use it to line your underwear. You don't want to use a tampon & introduce bacteria & cause an infection.

I would stay away from tampons all together regardless of what the clinic says.

Your cervix may still be a bit open and you really don't run to run the risk of infection by putting anything in there.

I have an issue with pads as well. Some of the Always brand pads really irritates me. So I use Stayfree and never have any issues. I also have tried the new Always radiant or whatever they are called and they are WONDERFUL... I dont itch or anything.

I would follow your clinic's directions. try a cotton wash cloth down there for a while instead of a maxi pad.

I terminated a pregnancy back in 2007 due to medical complications and I have YET to go back to using tampons. They are too uncomfortable now and leak all over the dang place.

They said no baths for two weeks either! I will run to the store and pick up some of the "natural disposables" that you mentioned and see how that works out. I definitely don't want an infection, but I have really sensitive skin so I've got to figure something out!

I would use a washcloth. I would not wear a tampon.
