Swollen Optic Nerve?

posted 13th Jan
My husband went to the eye doctor yesterday and the doctor called us last night and said his optic nerve was swollen. That he needed to see his doctor and an ophthalmologist ASAP. She sent some info over and it looks like this is typically cause by intracranial pressure usually caused by swelling of the brain or a tumor. We are both freaking the smurf out. I stopped with google because it was just getting bad. I cant find anything that says sometimes this just happens for no reason or that there is no serious cause. Does any have any experience or more knowledge on this? He sees the doctor tomorrow but im just so scared.

I have Intracranial Hypertension aka Pseudotumor Cerebri and my optic nerves are swollen. Im currently on medication to lower the cerebral spinal fluid and working on losing weight since that sometimes helps with remission.

At first they ran tests to rule out tumors. Ive seen many doctors. I was seeing a Neurotologist (like a neurologist but they specialize in problems of the ear) because my symptoms started with Pulsatile Tinnitus which is a whooshing in my right ear in tune with my heartbeat and some visual disturbances. Once they ruled out tumors I was sent to a neuro-optalmologist and I was diagnosed with Papilledema (which is swelling of the optic nerves). That was followed by a Lumbar puncture or spinal tap to measure my cerebral spinal pressure. It was high, so my diagnosis of Intracranial Hypertension was confirmed and I started taking medicine to lower the csf. Im currently seeing a Neurologist. Does he have any symptoms?

Your husband probably has optic neuritis something like that its the inflammation of the eye. the eye and the brain is connected to that nerve and that nerve is swollen. i had it twice. treatment i had to be hospitalized for 3 days with steroids injected in me 1 per day. They would do MRI to make sure they dont see white spots on the side of the eyes it can cause MS. Multiple sclerosis. if he has blurry vision to a point everything is gray and has painin the side of the eye when he looks right or left go see a doctor.

His vision is fine. He has had bad headaches recently but he had a horrible cough that would cause them, otherwise everything has been normal. He sees the doctor tomorrow morning.

Bad headaches are a symptom of intracranial hypertension. Some people experience some symptoms but not others. Does he ever feel pressure in his head, like fullness?

Not that he has mentioned. The headaches are gone now that the cough is gone.

I never really got headaches but a lot of people do.

Hopefully its nothing serious. Keep us updated.

since he has never had a picture of his optic nerve before they have no baseline. yes it is swollen but it could be from any number of things up to and including that it could just be that way. He goes back in two weeks for further testing.
