My name is Jenni and I'm a smoothie addict...

posted 13th Jan
Anyone else out there have a smoothie addiction? I've loved smoothies since high school and have always justified my obsession by their relative healthiness and lack of preservatives (if you don't add any!)

Since being pregnant, I've been eating smoothies now more than ever. Regardless of how nauseous or gross I'm feeling I can always tolerate a good smoothie.

The recipe I've been using a TON of lately is a Peach Smoothie:

Frozen sliced peaches, no-fat/low fat vanilla yogurt, skim milk, pinch nutmeg and just enough brown sugar to make it perfect (about a tablespoon?)

I had been using the blender that my mom and dad got for their wedding present in 1984 (no kidding!) but it finally started slowing down and died.... so I bought a vitamix.... and it was expensive... but so worth it!

Any other good smoothie recipes out there?

I have been wanting to try green smoothies for EVER! I just haven't been brave enough to do it lately. They say if you add a handful or two of spinach to most fruit smoothies you don't taste the "green" at all... I need to just try it already!

You really can't, the texture does change though and that can affect a lot of people, but for me I seriously love the,!

Do you think spinach would be the best choice to try as a "beginner"? I've also heard that Kale and Romaine are good choices... I wonder which one would be the best to START with... Any insight?

When you guys are saying "Chocolate" are you implying chocolate syrup? I, personally, use unsweetened cocoa powder and it gives it a very subtle chocolate taste- the sweetness from other ingredients usually takes away any bitterness. I used to use a lot of diet Sierra Mist and other diet drinks to liquify or sweeten my recipes but I'm really trying to cut out the artificial sweeteners.

Oooohh... I've been wanting to try an almond smoothie similar to this! I didn't think to add vanilla extract...

Definitely spinach or spring mix for beginners.

Kale has a taste that you have to get used to and so does cilantro. And after a while, you'll figure out what greens work best with what fruits and vice versa. Like I love cilantro with pineapple, but so much with spinach anymore.
