I agree, usually that's only said when someone is getting impatient and doing dumb and possibly dangerous things to try to bring on labor lol I was an overcooked baby, I was 3 weeks late, my sister was almost a month later than they told my mother lol That's just how we roll ;)

I think in other times, there are problems which causes the body to have the baby early and obviously not ready.

For the OP.
Since it's opinionated and just 'food for thought' My thought on women who don't labor, I think it's some kind of adaption, from years of inductions that were not necessary, and C-sections because of inductions gone wrong. Baby will come when baby is ready, it's really not the baby's choice. It's the woman's body that chooses when and how much of that hormone that does cause labor to happen. Women used to labor all the time with no help or pain relief, etc., and at the same time look at birth rate, that was all natural selection which we've all but gotten rid of with modern medicines. I get the BG mama's who get irritated with women at 38 weeks talking about or bragging about how they convinced their doctor to induce already. Which is ridiculous adding to the problem. I'm not even close to a medical perfessional but as a human being with eyes and understanding compare past to present in terms of birth. You look at past there wasn't much option. You waited, and when baby came, you either labored and lived, labored and died, or labored with complications that no one could do anything about leaving you scarred and or the baby dead, or with issues itself.

Getting rid of that natural selection process, I think has to do with some of the women you hear of being induced past 42 weeks because they never labored. When asking this question though it's not a fast process at all. We're all still evolving. No one but the women's body can decide when baby is ready to come... Except for the doctor lol. and even over 2-3 decades I think that a doctor being able to choose, has started changing the way things happen with our bodies.

I have heard that in healthy pregnancies with no complications the lung development of the baby can trigger labor. There is a protein that is released when the lungs are fully developed that triggers a reaction to start labor. If you think about it that way then yes that is the baby starting labor when the baby is ready. I think that it is just one factor but it is something to think about.

I kind of just skimmed the article there might be more information in it.

For me, what causes my pre-term labor is my cervix. I dilate because my cervix can't hold in the weight of the baby. My first son was born at 23 weeks and he was definitely not ready. To add on top of my cervix issues, it doesn't seem like I can go into labor normally either. My body contracts non-stop from as early as 10 weeks last pregnancy without making any sort of natural progress. I dilate to 2 to 3 cm's and then I get stuck. 2 to 3cm's isn't a big deal at 37+weeks, but it's a huge deal for a baby who can be born through that at 23 weeks.

In someone normal, there is a natural progression where the baby gets into the proper position and puts pressure on the cervix to help dilate it. I've heard that there are hormones released into the amniotic fluid when the lungs are mature which triggers the changes to start happening too. There is also an enzyme that attaches the amniotic sac to the walls of the uterus. That starts to break down around the end of pregnancy. That adds the weight of the amniotic sac/fluid on top of the pressure from the baby's head. All of that pressure leads to contractions which also helps with dilation and effacement.

In *most* women, this process happens around 40 weeks give or take a couple of weeks and allowing at least 2 weeks in either direction where the due date could be off. You also have to remember that way back when, women didn't have U/S. They didn't know exactly how far along they were. What about women with irregular periods ? There's no way they could guess how far along they were. The baby was just born when he was born.

If we left it all up to natural selection, I would have never had any children of my own. They all would have died. Because they lived, there's always a chance they'll pass down my issues to their children and so on and so forth. But lets hope that's not how this works out.

I'm definitely not saying that the almost complete elimination of natural selection hasn't given us all a miracle baby.   My baby;s a miracle baby, but I haven't had much issue other than actually becoming pregnant. And carrying.

Great opinion and voice. I do agree with this and I'm sorry to hear about your complications. It really can't be easy...  My mother nor my grandmother and sister have labored on their own and now it's my turn and I have yet too have it happen as well. My doctor having delt with my sister with one pregnancy has said that it could be that our bodies just need that extra push....so it got me thinking..

But what about baby dropping and all that?! Obviously our body is not doing that. The baby is doing that. And that helps your cervix dilate. So idk. It's probably both baby and body. They all have to work together.

And going extremely overdue like to where the baby dies and never comes out I would consider that a pregnancy complication. So It wouldn't fall under what I would categorize as applicable for that "baby will come when it's ready" advice.

I would think the baby dropping is some baby and some of the body. Which is why we are told to walk to and to sway our hip and how there are different positions that help guide the baby down. I'm just saying...instead of maybe people saying baby will come when baby is ready...is just silly. If for some reason the mother was at her wits end and wanted to try everything on the planet to get her baby to come out...and it was all about "the baby being ready when it's ready" then why not let her at it....because it could cause labor, which is why it is not suggested earlier on in the pregnancy...
