Hi there...

Hi there, fellow Moms.

I know that this is a special needs forum, but I wasn't sure if this was the place to post about my son's ADHD? Was looking for some outside experiences, thoughts, and just someone to talk to. If this *isn't* the place for me to be, can someone point me to a good support site/forum?

TIA
Kira

My 7 year old is ADHD and has been on Vyvanse for about a month now. Hardest, yet best, decision Ive ever made was putting him on the medicine

Hello   I'd say this is a good place to post, because technically ADHD is considered special needs. I know because I am ADHD, and have been my whole life lol. My DS is to young to really know if he will have it or not, so I dont know about the perspective of being a parent of an ADHD child, but I remember being one if that helps

There is new research out there that has shown that having enlarged tonsils will make your child act up much the same as ADHD. They found that many children were misdiagnosed. Enlarged tonsils affect sleep, which in turn makes it hard for children to focus and stay calm.

Tonsils have been out since he was about 2. Had horrid ear infections/throat issues so out they came, along with his adenoids and he got tubes.

Patti, when you started the Vyvanse, how did your child do? We started it today, and DS seems very, very tired and just slow. We've done Focalin but have found that it's wearing off to soon in the day and his teachers are having issues in the second half of the day, so we swapped.

My sons tonsils are fine.

What is the dose? My sons on 20mg
My son is doing great on it. He still has energy and is himself, but the impulsive behavior isnt as bad. He still has his moments, but thats who he is. His teacher has noticed a huge difference in him..Even in just a couple days of starting it. It may take a couple days for his body to get used to it, but you should notice a change pretty quickly...thats what the doctor told me anyways. I was surprised the second day when he was calmer and more focused.

I never said it was the tonsils. Just saying that often its being misdiagnosed. A good first place to start instead of medicating. My oldest was thought to be ADHD but now they've found his tonsils are enlarged. Id rather have them removed and see if it helped than to medicate my child unneccesarily. That was my point.

I waited a year before starting medicine. It wasnt an easy decision at all, but Im doing whats best for him

We've been putting off doing meds for a few years, but when it got to the point that he was getting in serious trouble at school, we decided it was time. He's on the 20mg, too, and we were just worried that this low-energy, blah thing would be the norm. The Focalin was helping a good deal during the mornings, but once about 12.00 rolled around, his teacher, was noticing he was back to square 1. We're really resistant to him taking meds at school, because of the fight we sometimes have with him. With the Vyvanse, it's simple to just dump it into his morning OJ and he's amicable to that.

Yeah I put his in apple sauce in the morning. Give it a few days and see how he does.
How old is he?

He's six. We are hoping that the lack of energy will pass in the next two days. We'll be sending a note with him to school to let his teacher know that he's on a different med and to let us know if she sees anything different.

Yeah its always a good idea to let the teacher know of any changes so she can be aware and be on the look out. Ive had a great relationship with my sons teacher and shes really helped us in this process.
