Euthanasia for animals...

posted 13th Jan
Do you think it is okay for someone to euthanize their own animals - like shoot them in the head, if the animal would be put to sleep anyway, or do you think it constitutes animal cruelty?

If they're just going to be out down anyways then I don't see why not. It costs A LOT of money to euthanize and cremate an animal. We did it last year and it cost close to $500. Our dog had cancer spread through her body and we didn't want her suffering anymore, which is the only reason I'd be okay with it.

It depends on the situation. If the animal has been injured to such a degree that it would be cruel to wait for a vet to arrive and euthanize them humanely, then it would be better to euthanize yourself

If you knew what you were doing, i mean if the animal dies straight away then i guess so but i know i couldn't myself. I would ask a farmer to do it though if i knew my pet was suffering and i couldn't get to a vet or something

I guess I am kind of thinking that YOU are the farmer in this story. ;)

And yes - I would also say it is safe to assume you would do it quick & painless or you wouldn't try to to do it at all...I hope.

when I was 7 we were walking home from school and I found a little sick bird. I wanted to nurse it back to health but it was a ridiculous idea haha. my mom's boyfriend took it into the garden and dropped a big rock on it to put it out of its misery. I was so upset, but it obviously wasn't going to survive.
I don't think I could physically do it to my own pet, but I don't think it's abusive. I hate seeing people putting their pets through tons of medical treatment giving them no quality of life.

I also think we should be allowed to choose to be euthanized ourselves, but that's a while other debate!

If it needs to be done then is not abuse. My dad has killed a few dogs that really needed to be put down.

of course. sometimes its more humane (i.e. suffering from trauma).

If you know the animal will be killed instantly, then yes.

I wouldn't be able to shoot my own animal though, I would ask someone to do it.

I think it is ok if you make the shot as to where it will die instantly. My mom tried to kill a goat like that once, but she emptied 6 rounds into its head and it still wouldn't die. She had to call my grandpa to come finish it.

That's what I would be afraid of... not killing the animal with the first shot.

Before I had my daughter, I worked at a vet. Where I was at, the procedure involved knocking the animal out, and then administering euthanasia. I felt this was the most humane way for the dog and for the owner. I would say this is not possible when doing it yourself at home, so no, I do not think it is ok.

But if done properly, the animal is dead before it realizes what is going on. It is painless if done properly.

I understand that, but I think that it assumes that all people would know how to do it properly. Someone who has experience would, but the general public (myself included) would not.

I don't assume all people know how, but I wouldn't think you'd do it if you didn't.
