Preemies and germs

posted 12th Jan
Ok here's my dilemma. So my mom wanted to have a baby shower for me. Then we found out I was being hospitalized and having dd early so she decided to do like a party after baby was born. Well I didn't know anything about preemies so this sounded good. Then everyone meets baby and whatnot.

Well now I'm hospitalized and have been talking with nicu staff and nurses around here and they said I should avoid taking her anywhere or letting lots of people around her until April which is the end of rsv season.

So what do you think I should do? I was talking to my mom and throwing a couple ideas around. We had mentioned maybe doing a baby shower while I'm in the hospital via Skype that way I have stuff before baby comes. Then we discussed waiting until April or may but dd will be about 2-3 mos old. And idk if that's long enough for her to be good enough to go around a large group of people or if it's even worth celebrating by that time since shell be so old.

Any advice or ideas are welcome. I just don't want to risk her ending up back in the nicu over a party.

I like the Skype idea, I would be really worried about germs too if you did a meet and greet especially since everyone is saying this year the flu is really bad.

My mom had a "shower" for Rory when he was 3 months. I think it went just as well as a before birth one, and everyone loved having him to be there and interact with.

ds grabbed the phone. Lol
I has dd #1 6 weeks early so I had her baby shower when she was a few months old. The skype idea is good. Could each person see you at the hospital indivually to bring your gift

Idk if they'd come here or not. I have 2 weeks left maybe 3. I've been here 2 weeks and have had no visitors yet so I'm not very hopeful

Is a few months old enough to be around germs and stuff? Or is it more about the season?

With how sick I've been this year, having a possible preemie, definitely wait until after RSV season is over. Nat was hospitalized with pneumonia and rsv, since we weren't certain she was a preemie, we still took her out, let brother expose her and what not.

She was hospitalized for about 9 days, with lots of breathing treatments, an iv in her head, it's the most horrible thing ever.

Definitely wait.

Thanks. What do I do about lylian? Like does she need to change clothes as soon as she comes Home from school and wash her hands good immediately?

You could ask the hospital staff if you could have the shower at the hospital. I know my mother asked the nurses if they allowed showers at the hospital i was in and they said yes. But then LO decided to come after a week on me being hospitalized at 25weeks so we had my shower at her house while he was still in the NICU a month before he came home. He will be a year old next sunday and we still limit his contact with a lot of people. he gets his RSV shots and has had his flu shot but i just feel more comfortable with keeping him home and way from exposure as much as possible. Hubby is a stay at home dad right now so Eli isn't in childcare and being exposed to germs. It is a struggle but totally worth ensuring his continued good health.

Yeah I took the rest of the school year of work so Scarlytt doesn't have to go to daycare too. Which is also gonna be a struggle but were gonnamake it work. I'll go back to work when she's about 7 mos old probably.

Maybe I'll ask if we can do it here but it's Gettig to be short notice and the nicu Ian anywhere near any of our families. I am alone all the time   plus I never know when I could deliver. Could be anytime between now and the end of the month.

With my experience and what I didn't do. I don't think it would hurt to make a game out of it. Make her wash her hands when she touches baby, all that fun stuff. Make a fun game out of it!

Depends on how early she comes. My oldest was 35 weeks and I didn't get all those restrictions other than to not let him be handled or played by with by others until he hit his due date because it was stressful to a preemie who needed to just sleep and grow. He didn't require NICU care though.

i love the skype party idea
other than that, i think you're SOL...
i would NOT take her around people for at least 3 - 6 months, if she's born before 36 weeks.

i took my munchkins to a party about 2 months after they were born.
the party was in july, and i kept them basically to myself
certainly didn't let them get passed around or anything
but sure enough, both caught colds. i couldn't forgive myself. what did they get out of the party? nothing! i felt sooo selfish for dragging them, and getting them sick.
just isn't worth it.

The skype idea is good so she can get stuff ahead of time & than maybe throw her a welcome home party once she's out for a few more things

Thanks. I'd never forgive myself if she got sick and was back in the nicu over me doing something I could have passed up.

I don't mind people coming to visit her in my home if its 1-3 people at a time. But i feel a big party is just too risky.
