booster laws

posted 12th Jan
Can someone PLEASE tell me the booster laws? I thought it was 4 years and 40lbs...am I wrong?

I keep trying to search online and everything is so very vague. We are in PA if it matters.

disclosure: Yes I know 5-points are safest for as long as possible and we are keeping that for our main cars, but maybe a booster for grandmoms car as he's rarely in there.

I believe the national law is 4 and 40, however I know each state is different.

That is extremely dated. OP, your best bet will be to go to PA's dps site. You should be able to find something there. I don't think I have ever seen a state where they couldn't legally ride in a booster at 4 AND 40 pounds.

When you say booster, do you mean a high back booster with the 5-point harness? OR just the SEAT booster with the seatbelt?

Just a booster, whether it is highback or not. Here is this   http://www.justdrivepa.org/Resources/Pennsylvania-Law-of-Love-Brochure.PDF According to law they must be in a 5 point harness until 4. Then a booster until 8. Ideally until they are 4'9 but law is only until 8.

Thanks! My mom has an older 2 door sebring convertible so this is ideal for that. She has to either put the top down or maneuver everything around to buckle him in lol

Oh yeah, for a situation like that, a booster is definitely better than a seat that really doesn't fit.

Yeah, I have an SUV, so we are good there. If you use a high back booster with the seatbelt, what do you do with the harness straps? just sit on them or take them out completely?

Take them out completely. That's what I did anyway.

4yo 40lbs and they should be able to pass the 5 step test (5 step test isn't law, but it shows if they are ready for a booster and SAFE in one)
