Quoting FroggysMommy:" This. If it was a public use lot and not owned by target i'd say they were wrong but Id still shop there. ... [snip!] ... Target should if its a PRIVATE lot. Do I think they are dicks about not letting them? Sure. But in the end, they dont HAVE to."

Morally i don't find a "party at a neighbors" comparable to 30 minutes honoring someone who died fighting for the country.. but yeah.

Quoting ☮LoveAndSerenity:" I would continue shopping there. I don't see it as something target did wrong. The lady called, target ... [snip!] ... kind but since the people for the ceremony were butthurt, they may have taken it harshly. You cant go off of one sides story."

i totally agree w/this. If Target were to break policy for this one incident, it would probably have all other kinds of ''groups'' attempting to use their lot.

Just catching up now.
I'll still shop at target, cos, it's target-- but i do find it tacky & can understand the upset, to not be able to make an exception for 30 minutes for a military family & others in a military town honoring a fallen soldier like they do without issue many other places around here.
Like they said, it ended up happening anyways, but yeah.

No, I wouldn't. It's their property. If the family wasn't shopping there, it's almost like loitering. Here there are places that tow your vehicle if you're not a customer...

I would still shop at Target if they killed a litter of puppies. I love Target.

Target is not at fault. I don't care what kind of demonstration it was - you don't get a pass on what is essentially trespassing just because it's related to a "fallen hero."

They called and asked - they were refused. They are at fault for going there anyway.

There are any number of reasons a business like Target wouldn't want that on THEIR property. Not being pegged as supporting one ideology over another, public nuisance, scaring off customers. Insurance was the most likely reason tho. If the demonstration turned violent or the police were called or something, you just KNOW someone would sue Target because it was on their property.

Quoting KNZ.:" She informed them that they intended to use the back part of the parking lot (which is always empty ... [snip!] ... People are upset with Target's inability to accommodate honoring a military family for a half an hour in a military town."
I've heard Target wasn't a very friendly military company. Seems it's true.

Im off to bed (I think) but saw this from my phone n thought id post it to sum up the thread (I do value everyone's opinions on it, just been on n off bg today)
This is from the kitsapsun.com (full article there)

Target on Saturday acknowledged a misstep and issued an apology.
"The Target team offers our deepest appreciation and condolences to the family of Sean Brazas for their sacrifice and to the Silverdale, Wash., community for its loss," said Target spokeswoman Jessica Deede. "We sincerely apologize that actions and comments by our store team marred a community event to honor this hero on Friday. We are connecting with the store team immediately to learn from this so it doesn't happen again."
Brazas said she is satisfied with Target's apology.

I still don't get the issue. If Target said no in the first place, why not find a different location instead of planning an event when you picked a location short on parking? I live in a small town & we have lots of choices in places to host such events. We recently had a service for our 1st death in Afghanistan. They held it at the football stadium & it was packed, but it also accommodates a ton of parking as it hosts large events all the time. I seriously know of NO American town, no matter the size, that doesn't have a high school football stadium. I just think they did poor planning & then moved on even when told no & then got pissy when Target asserted their rights. It may not be illegal to park there (as the sheriff said), but they certainly can have you towed if you do. The only difference is you can't be issued a ticket or fine, just towing & impound fees.

Not being illegal & have the RIGHT to do so are two different things.

I absolutely feel for the family's loss. If I were in charge & it was MY property, I'd tell them to go ahead & use the parking lot. BUT, I also have worked corporate before (and hated it) & many times the corporate comes & apologizes for their own employees following the protocol they set up. Then they act like the employees are idiots, the same ones they may have written up and/or fired IF they had said "yes" when it's against company policy to authorize ANYONE to use the parking lot for non customer related business. When you are talking about big box retailers you can't be shocked when their policies don't actually give a smurf about the community. They only apologized now because they care about your money - same as they did before....so they want to make sure your money keeps coming. It' snot some big call of conscience that happened here.

Real moral of this story? If you want a place to shop that cares about your community then shop ANYWHERE that isn't a national chain. A local business would have never said no - both because they wouldn't be so stupid AND because they give a smurf.
