Agreed. I feel bad for the family don't get me wrong, but they in no way shape or form have to let people use their parking lot for an event not related to the company. I don't think target is in the wrong here at all.

That's what would bug me. Target's and other stores like that usually have enormous parking. Here, we have people set up random things back of the parking lot from time to time. So, to be unwilling to accomodate a ceremony for a fallen hero, especially if it was only for a short time, is ridiculous. And the sheriff even said they weren't breaking any laws by doing so.

I guess Target has the right to say "no", but it wasn't appropriate (imo) for them to do so.

A half an hour event where servicemen, mayors, and county commissioners along with family members and the wife of a fallen soldier..you'd think a local store would be honored to help accommodate a small space of their parking (that's never even full)

This was her explanation:
No one commenting on target's page seems to care at all if it's against the policy or not.

From the widow of this fallen soldier
I am stationed in Washington State and shop often at the Target Store on Silverdale Way in Silverdale, WA as do most of my Brothers and sisters in arms. On May 30, 2012 my husband, MA2 (EXW) Sean E. Brazas was Killed in Action while serving in Afghanistan. Today, we hung a Gold Star Banner in his honor on the street light on the corner of your store. We called weeks ahead of time to let the store manager know that we would be having this ceremony. The street light is on city property so we were just doing it as a courtesy call to let the store know there would be a lot of traffic on the corner infront of the store. We also informed the manager that the parking lot may have additional cars parked in it due to the ceremony. The ceremony was from 1030 am to 1100 am. The manager told us we were absolutely NOT aloud to use there parking lot for any part of our ceremony, to include parking our vehicles. We politely reminded her he was KILLED IN ACTION protecting our freedoms. She once again denied the request and told us it was "Target Policy". We went ahead and used the parking lot to park our cars anyway. We had several mayors, county commissioners, and service members in attendance along with myself, Seans wife. We utilized the very very BACK of the parking lot to park our cars then gathered near the street corner. While people were pulling up and gathering 2 target employees approached me and asked me what was going on. I explained to them that we were having a public ceremony on the street corner for my husband and we were simply parking our cars and gathering on city property. The gentleman told me this required written permission. I explained that I had asked for permission and was denied.. But this was city property where we were gathering and as far as parking was concerned I did not see any "No Trespassing" signs. I also explained it was 1030 in the morning and there were tons of open parking spaces available for customers. They continued to give me a lecture about how we could not utilize the parking lot. By this time the sheriff had arrived to attend the ceremony and said he'd take Care of it and said we were in no way violating any laws. Thankfully, the rest of the ceremony went flawlessly, no thanks to Target.
I was VERY disappointed in the way things were handled. It's unfortunate that your company is not more supportive of the military, especially of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. I hope someone somewhere reads this and fixes this so called "policy" you guys have in place. Its truly Unacceptable
Thank you for your time
Very Respectfully,
Allie Brazas

I just wouldn't shop at that Target. It shouldn't have been a huge deal to use their parking lot, hell, that ceremony could've brought them a lot of business. But, I wouldn't stop shopping at Target all together.

I don't really care if the back lot was usually empty or not. I'm siding with Target on this.

Their lot, their decision. People can be pissed all they want but Target doesn't have to do anything Target doesn't want to do.

The massive amount of people commenting on it on Target's page don't seem to agree.
It's tacky of them to not be able to accommodate the family of a fallen hero for a half 'n hour in a military town.
There was no possible way that they were impeding parking in that lot.

Well, that's the thing. No, they definitely don't have to do anything they don't want to do. I don't think anyone's debating that. But, morally speaking they should have reacted in a more supportive way.

No. Im not. Target own their carpark and have every right to decide what happens there even if the Sheriff said it was fine, I would personally have taken my service elsewhere instead of just carrying on against there wishes knowing they were going to stand up and say something.

It was wrong for them to be rude yes and they could have allowed them to use the parking lot which would have been nice BUT if she called weeks ahead of time and asked to use part of Target's parking lot and Target said no then she should have found another location. The fact that she just went ahead and did it anyways was not right either. It's a sucky situation of course but if it's Targets policy then they have the right to do what they want with their property.

I would not stop shopping at Target.

It's targets property. They can do as they wish with it.
I wouldn't stop shopping at a place because they told people they can't park on THEIR property.

It sucks that they wouldn't let her use it but they told her no ahead of time and she did it anyway, so she was in the wrong. It's their parking lot so they can decide what to do with it and she should have just found somewhere else for people to park.

I would continue shopping there. I don't see it as something target did wrong. The lady called, target told her no and she should have found somewhere else to park. To do so after target said no is stupid. The employees could have also been kind but since the people for the ceremony were butthurt, they may have taken it harshly. You cant go off of one sides story.

This. If it was a public use lot and not owned by target i'd say they were wrong but Id still shop there.

Now if it is a private lot and target said no... sorry they are in the wrong. Would you guys like a neighbor to throw a party and say "Its in the middle of the night, we are going to use your driveway and front of your house for parking!" Not asked. Told. That's your house, you should be able to say no. Just as Target should if its a PRIVATE lot.

Do I think they are dicks about not letting them? Sure. But in the end, they dont HAVE to.
