Can you just sign up whenever? Most companies have an enrollment period.

Yes I can sign up whenever. It's a privately owned company so there aren't a lot of strict policies like that. The only problem is that it takes 30 days before it is effective and doesn't pay bills prior to then, but it's not a HUGE problem.

If you can have insurance why don't you?? Does your SO or child have insurance.

I'm not completely sure, sorry. Why does it matter?

Just curious. We are looking for new options, and no enrollment period is pretty rare.

No, neither of them have insurance. We still take DD to her pedi, we just pay out of pocket for it. DH and I rarely need medical attention, and when we do we just pay for it And honestly, I can't give you a legitimate reason as to why I haven't signed up for it. I just haven't made it a huge priority, but I'm guessing you're going to tell me I should. I know that I need to, I just haven't.

Honestly, I understand not seeing it as a priority when everyone is generally healthy. But I do think it would be a good idea to get it sooner rather than later because you never know when something catastophi could happen. A car accident, sudden illness, a fall, anything. We had JUST gotten insurance when my son had his first seizure episode, he had been healthy up until then, and he needed to be in the ICU for four days on a ventilator, three days regualr in patient, and had to have two MRIs and three EEGs. We would hage had a bill for close to $200,000 if we hadnt just enrolled. It was a sudden unexpected illness. Kwim?

yea, I totally understand. It seems stupid that I haven't done it yet, and I'd probably kick myself if something like that happened. I think I'm going to talk to my boss the next time I work about it and sign up. I really just hadn't put a ton of thought into it.

ETA: and sorry about your son.

Thanks he's pretty good now. He's 6 and has been seizure free for 10 months and is on a pretty low dose of his anti convulsants for now.
But no one eve expects something terrible to happen, I just comes out of no where. Same reason I think its pretty important to have life insurance. But ever since bug got sick that first time I'm a paranoid freak.
