Fixing adoption problems

posted 12th Jan
One of the most common arguments I've seen is that instead of getting an abortion, a woman should opt for adoption instead. Well the simple question that I like to pose (simply because it usually leads to great debate) is what do you think can be done to help fix some of the problems with the adoption and foster care system.

It's a very flawed system both because of volume of children, lack of funds and some rotten people so what can be done to make it better, for the children and for the parents?

After watching my friend go through this I would say the biggest problem is that they make it more difficult to obtain a child threw state side adoption then overseas so people are adopting children out of the country verses going through the three ring circus the united states has made to adopt a child here which means more kids grow up in foster care or adoption agencies verses in a home where they could feel loved or wanted.

I agree with what she said along with the excessive costs of adoption.

Definitely the hoops and cost. I would love to adopt, but there's no way I can afford the actual cost of adoption.

I dont know if its this way in the states, but here it can be very simple to adopt, if you foster first and not costly at all.

And I know ppl who have overcame those adoption issues by first becoming a foster parent to NB babies that are taken on a permnant basis. The Government pays for everything for the said child till the legal adoption is complete then its all you.

But with just plain out adoption, cost and all those hoops you need to go through (they are important hoops) but can be very demanding and difficult. I hate the fact that it is easier to adopt overseas then children from your own country state/province whichever. Its a shame

All important points but the question I had is what suggestions would you have to help fix all these problems.

Lol I think the answers would be pretty obvious after reading all the responses Making adoption easier in the states and lowering the cost would be the two best options out of everything posted

Do you guys have a problem with the race/heritage type thing? In the UK they prefer to place a child with their race. So you may have a child from Chinese heritage and plenty of White British couples but they would rather not place the child until a couple of Chinese heritage come along..... Which may never happen so it is really screwed up but they are looking to completely overhaul the system to avoid this in future. I mean there are couples who have not been able to adopt a baby because there are no white babies and they wont allow them do adopt any other babies of a different race so they have went on and adopted say a Chinese/Indian/etc baby from those actual countries. It's crazy!

The problem with adopting through the foster system is a lot of those kids have all sorts of issues and those are things that some people do not feel qualified to handle.

I would perhaps have adoption assistance programs or financial counseling to prospective parents to help with costs.

I think regulating agencies better to allow for the process to be streamlined a bit would accelerate the process of adopting in the states.

I'd also perhaps have a bit of a tax credit for someone who adopts within the country.

Here it is rare that termination happens. At least in our county, so while becoming attached to a child you have to also watch their parents still have visitation, until the termination actually happens which can take up to a year.
And sometimes right before the year is up they decide to give it one last try with their parents.

I find it ridiculous. It is more common here in the native americans, then it is very difficult to find them foster homes because only so many people are willing to take older children yet they can only be with Native American people.
My daughters daycare lady is white and has two black children in foster care right now. She also has an adopted black daughter though.
