My kid is going to get me arrested.

posted 12th Jan
My 2 almost 3 year old has been on this interesting kick lately.
It'll go something like this:

"Mommy I'm mad at grandpa/daddy/sister/random other person."
"Ok why are you mad at them?"
"They hit me!"

Some of these people he wouldn't have even seen that day.
Oh and for the record. We don't even spank our kids. We may threaten it though haha.

I'm just concerned he'll say this in front of the wrong person. But I don't want to tell him he's wrong for saying it. I want him to be able to tell me if something is actually happening. But in the case I know it's not. So I don't know what to do or even say.
Any advice?

Just ask him when this supposed hit happened. If you know that he wasn't even near them at that particular time. Tell him it isn't ok to blame someone for something they didnt do. But reinforce that he can tell you when it does happen but it actually has to happen.

I am going to say it is just a phase. DD went through that when she was almost 3. Anytime I tried to discipline her in public she would scream, " Don't hit me." It was so embarrassing. She then moved on to "Help me Help me." Now it is "Leave me alone, I don't know you."

I've definitely investigated when he first started saying this. And nothing has happened at all. He said once that grampa pulled his hair one day but grampa happened to be out of town that day.

This doesn't have anything to do with hitting but DS is in a phase, whenever we go out in public and I try to put him in a cart or hold his hand he looks at everyone around and screams "HELP! HELP MEEEEE!" I get the strangest looks from people because I think they think I am kidnapping my son...   I just tell everyone, "This IS my child, I promise..." Lol. He's 3 btw.

I would talk to him about what is truth and lies. I work with preschoolers and I know to take everything they say with a grain of salt. But some people freak out at every little thing, so you really Hve to be careful with that stuff

Ya you still have to reinforce every time when it is truth or a lie. Tell him it hurts people's feelings when he was things like that. My son at that age was able to tell the difference between truth and lies and feelings. But he is a sensitive child.
