for those who just had or going to have baby, regarding flu

posted 12th Jan
since the flu is so bad right now, are you worried about it? and if so what precautions are you going to take regarding people visiting/holding baby? curious

Is the baby a newborn? If it were ME... I'd keep LO home as much as possible. Any visitors, or anyone handling the baby should wash their hands really well.

That's probably about all you can do. Of course, if they're willing to get the flu shot, encourage them to do so.

The flu shot while baby is in utero supposedly helps the baby after he is born. It wont totally protect but it could lessen the chances, the length and the symptoms.

I wouldnt let anyone near the baby that has had a fever in the last 24 hours. If you have the flu, you are contagious a day before you are symptomatic and 5 days after showing symptoms. Flu germs can live up to 8 hours on a surfice and during a sneeze, they can traval up to 6 ft! I learned this yesterday thanks to my news channel. lol.

I do, but I work in healthcare and am exposed to a lot of sick patients.

My husband and LO did NOT get the shot this year, although I'm thinking I may get LO his.

It's not too late for you to get the vaccine. And if you're going to breastfeed, your baby will get all the antibodies you produce.

Yeah, its bad this year. I didnt get the flu shot while pregnant. No one told me I should get it but I delivered in September. So when I took LO to the pediatrician's office for the first time, he was like "Why didnt you get it, it would have helped for the upcoming flu season when your LO is most susceptible!" Oops.   LO will be 6 months when the flu season starts winding down. lol.

Last year only 18 people died from the flu (or from consequences from the flu), the year before 122 people died. This year, we already have 8 dead in Boston and atleast another 7 in Massachusets. That's the only death tolls that were listed in the article I was reading and when I was watching the news. I'm sure there are more. We are off to a bad start. I guess the A strain happened this year and that is the nasty one that is giving everyone a tough time.

Oh wow, sounds really bad in Boston. I haven't heard how many people have died so far through out the country, but I did catch that a few children have passed, and a couple healthy adults.
