Anyone have Tricare STANDARD?

posted 12th Jan
I just found out the the one midwife in our area that does home births is now able to bill Tricare Standard. This is HUGE. It's the one thing I've wanted since finding out I was pregnant but could not afford 4 grand out of pocket to hire her. Now she can bill Tricare Standard and I would only pay $800 out of pocket. I feel that is very doable. However, I don't have standard; I have Prime. I am willing to switch IF I know it won't cost me an arm and a leg to do so. I see a neuropsychiatric doc for anxiety meds and I'm worried how much that would cost me. Plus pediatrician visits, etc. Any advice, insight, warnings?

I just switched to standard again this last week to go to a dr in morehead nc that only accepts standard. It will cost the sponsor like 26 bucks a month for standard and then 20 percent out of pocket for visits. You can keep everyone else in ur family on prime no reason to switch them. They are full on post anyways so we all got sent off anyways

For real? So I can keep my son and husband on Prime and JUST have me on standard for her to bill? That would be nice.

If someone else in your family is Prime, the baby will automatically be prime so no worry there.

Active duty sponsor
  • Rank E4 and below: $50 per individual/$100 per family
  • Rank E5 and above: $150 per individual/$300 per family

^deductible and then I think it's 15% after that

Yes u can do that. Seriously we are army and I live here in jacksonville nc and went to tricare and switched. You may have to wait a year to go back onto prime and ur sponsor will always stay on prime if he is active duty.

I'm not thrilled with a deductible of any kind when I can get it the same treatment for free with prime BUT in this case i'm willing to make an exception if I can have my home birth

Exactly...something you can't get on Prime so it'll be worth it. I switched to standard here but maternity was 100% covered. We were planning a home water birth, but ended up moving on base right at my due date so home wasn't very relaxing so we decided to do an outpatient hospital water birth.

From what I understand if they are aware of you doing a home birth at base they can tell you to go to the hospital. I know this because my husbands 1st sgts wife was a dula and they sent a lady to the hospital when they found out she was birthing at home. Might be different here this was at fort benning
