Crying it out?

posted 12th Jan
I am agents crying it out at night, but I feel kinda guilty right now on how I have been putting my 5 month old to bed.
When shes really sleepy, like on the brink of sleeping, I lay her down and turn her mobile on and leave the room. She chills out in her crib for a few and crys, I go in, put her binkie back in her mouth, tell her I love her and leave. I do this countless times until she falls asleep.
But tonight, she played me. She cried so hard in her crib, I was there stroking her hair, singing, holding her hand, but no. Nothing worked, so I caved and held her. Few seconds later she was cooing and laughing. This happen twice. So the last time I laid her down and didn't pick her up. No matter how hard she cried I didnt do it. I was there still. Than she rolled over and fell asleep.
For those moms who agree with me and don't let their kids cry it out, does this count? Would you do this/have you done this?

Isn't that CIO? I can't do it. I can't stand the crying. Plus our neighbors would probably call the cops. I thought babies needed to be like 6 months for CIO? I don't think a 5 month old can play you. I think she just wanted you.

I also don't believe they recommend CIO until 6 months. Even people in favor of CIO

I didnt mean "play me" like she knew what she was doing.
I meant everytime I picked her up she would coo and want to play with her toys. It was almost like she figured out if she cried long enough and hard enough I would pick her up.
I still showed her love and I was right there until she fell asleep. I just didnt pick her up.

Poor baby. She cried cause she wanted her mommy. She wanted to be comforted. She wasn't playing you. At 5 months old she's incapable of grasping the concept of "playing" someone.

True. Although I don't believe that 6-month-old babies need to be CIO either.

Your baby is not a super genius. She cried because she wanted the comfort of you being near her. That's it.

The first thing you do is cry it out.

The second thing (letting her cry "no matter how hard" ) is AWFUL and should never ever be done EVER!

She's a BABY!
She wanted comfort and love.
She has no object permanence now. When you leave the room, she thinks you're just GONE and will never be back.

Being "against" crying it out means there is NO CRYING...not for 5 mins, basically never.

ALL experts agree that CIO before 6 mo is dangerous to baby's development.

What you did tonight is, IMO, borderline abuse/neglect.

I was still there. I held her hand, stroked her hair.
Please, I feel horrible as it is and I just wanted advice, not being called a horrible mom.

I didn't call you a horrible mom. I said the act itself was horrible & that your wording was completely wrong. Because babies aren't conniving little things like that. Idk I couldn't just stand there & let my baby cry until they passed out... JMO. no you aren't horrible.

You're not a horrible mom. We all make mistakes. Do you have a nighttime routine? We do dinner, bath, story time, nursing in the rocking chair till she goes to sleep. DD is 10 months old and there is no crying involved. If she does get cranky or decides not to nurse we continue rocking until she is asleep. If she wakes up I rock/nurse her again. Some nights can be a long process and some nights she's out like a light.

she doesnt have a routine. she is also breastfed and its pretty much a free range when it comes to sleeping and eating.
she has sleep issues where she wont stay sleeping for more than 45 min at a time no matter if its a nap or bed time. I get 3-4 hours a sleep a day. Im at a lost on what to do.
like now she is a wake and playing on the floor after I apparently let her cry it out 30min ago. i dont know what to do.
