Does anyone know when breast pumps have to be covered by insurance? I know that that Obama passed a law but I wasn't sure when it has to go into effect? Just thinking ahead when this lil one comes. Thanks

January 1st is when the ACA went into effect. I just ordered mine from my insurance company a few days ago. I'm so happy they finally cover it and a LC

They can be covered but you may still have to pay. If I wanted to rent one is would have been 60$ a month after insurance, so I just bought one.

Mine will be covered 100%. I have United Healthcare. It is 'preventive'.

Its whenever your insurance renews in 2013. Most do Jan. 1st but not all. Also they only have to cover manual pumps. Its up to them if they want to cover more. My insurance only covers manual pumps so I bought my double electric and will use the manual they give me as a backup.

My insurance just hates me   blue cross blue shield. I swear I see it is like 50/50 when people say what their insurance covers. Just sucks I work full time and need an electric and cant get one. But I thought that would happen so I saved and just bought a pump in style.

I have BCBS Federal and they gave me a choice between an Ameda Manual and an Ameda Double Electric Kit (includes bag, tubing, bottles, mstorage bags, flange kit and all that.) I've heard some insurance companies carrying anything from the Medela Pump In Style to the Hygeia III Hospital Grade Pump.

Your bcbs likes you more than me   I hate that there are so many third party bcbs out there.

Thanks ladies. I guess I will just plan on saving for a new Medela Instyle or just rent the Symphony like I did last time. My Instyle that I have now is not working as good as it should. Sigh... Guess I will just have to invest in another one lol

Good luck. Hopefully you get more than the manual!

I think it's the fact that it's for federal employees. I don't a penny out of pocket for any of my prenatal care or for the delivery and am allotted the maximum allowable stay in the hospital. I hear that a lot of the perks of my insurance aren't standard by any means. It'll suck when it all ends next year, haha.

Call your insurance company beforehand. You never know what they'll cover. Hell, even BCBS varies from one program to the next. Other than the other mama in this thread, I know a few other women with BCBS in different states that all have different options for breast pumps and rentals.
