Self-Weaning at 8 Months?

posted 11th Jan
DS is 8 months old and I have to practically force him to eat a bottle except for in the early morning when he first wakes up and right before he goes to bed..and he MAY take one if he wakes up at night, which does not happen often. During the day he doesn't want anything to do with his bottle, he's more interested in EVERYTHING else, he'll take an ounce or 2 but after that he's wanting down to play. He eats his purees like a boss and I even let him gum on chicken at dinner (I don't do jarred meat, it smells like cat food). Could it be that he is trying to wean himself? I know that most of his nutrition needs to come from formula still but he just wants nothing to do with it :/

Have you tried giving him a sippy cup? I would cut back on some of the solids and let him up his formula intake. Also you can skip the purees and just give him straight table food if you want.

he kinda likes his sippy, he just doesn't want to hold it himself. And I've tried not giving him baby food at all for a few days and he still fights when I give him a bottle, he doesn't want it. I also do give him some table food, but not much, I don't want him having anything too greasy or salty and he also doesn't have teeth yet so I'm careful of what I give him. He has a huge appetite and will take and 8-10 ounce bottle no problem, as long as he's tired ie: first thing in the morning and right before bed

Babies dont need teeth to eat. Here is some great info on BLW if you're interested http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/babyledweaning.htm

eh, I've tried a little bit of BLW but it's not really for us right now, we live in income based housing at the moment and have inspection every 2-3 months, having carpet with stains all around the table won't fly and we'd get kicked out and there's not space in the kitchen to feed him...and yes we've tried those under the high chair mats, DS just has a love of messing up carpet. H does have one of those mesh "nomnomers' as I call them and i put fresh apples, oranges, ice, I've done a larger piece of chicken before and he LOVES that so.IDK I was really asking more about ways to get him to take his bottle ( and yes, we've done different kinds of nipples, the one we have is the ONLY one he will take at all)

Just keep offering and if he likes his sippy better give him formula in that. If he is doing 2-3 8-10oz bottles a day i wouldnt be worried.

Some babies dont take well to sippy cups. I tried all kinds with my first two and it was a no go. They both rejected the bottle before a year old. I tried a rubbermaid juice container with a straw and that worked wonders! It has a screw top lid and a spout. I would put their formula in it and sit them on my lap and help them hold it to drink. Worked so well, i am considering using that and skipping sippy cups all together when my new lo is ready.

I've actually considered that because when we are out to eat, I get water to drink and I'll do the whole "cover the top of the straw, put water in baby's mouth' thing and he actually sucks on the straw before i can move my finger....he's just lazy and knows that mommy is a sucker for the face he gives me when he wants his sippy lol, he reaches for it, grabs it and holds it...and throws it, but when it comes do drinking it he sits it on his lap and leans his head forward haha
