My biggest flaw as a mom

posted 11th Jan
I'm going to admit my biggest flaw as a parent. Right now. Right here.

I hate telling my kids no. I do tell them no, of course, but there are some occasions where I don't.

I don't stick to the rules and restrictions I set because I hate telling them no. It makes me feel 'bad' or 'mean.' I'm working on this though with my therapist. My daughter right now is trying to come in the living room with her sandwich. I told her no, we eat in the dining room, at the table, and then I bent a little (like an idiot) and let her roll her chair over to the corner of the dining room where she can see the tv while she eats her sandwich. Now she is still asking to come in here, I said no, but feel like a jerk

Some reassure me. Just venting I suppose.

Kids need to hear no. If they don't, they're in for a rude awakening as an adult because in the adult world, if someone says no, they mean no.

That's going to bite you in the ass later. I am glad you are working on it!

I have no problem saying no.

You gotta tell them no sometimes. But I know the feeling. I hate telling my DD no too.

You're not a jerk. I'd say... if it helps you... pick the things that are really important for you to stand your ground on, and do. Things that aren't as important, say yes once in a while so that you don't feel as bad.

Also-- it might help if you sit in the dining room with her to eat so she doesn't want to come where you are?

Oh it already is just at 4 and 2. It's not like I let them do whatever, I do tell them no, but I still feel like a jerk when I do it. I'm working very hard on fixing it now. The little rules and restrictions as a parent like "you can't take your toys in there" or "No, i cannot hold you right now, you can walk" are the hardest for me.

DD stays put much better if I'm doing whatever she's supposed to be doing with her. Then when she's playing happily on her own I can get things done or sit down for a hot sec.

we should start a 'say whatever you believe is your biggest flaw as a mom' thread. Some moms just need to get it off their chest.
