Someone please help, croup with stridor

posted 11th Jan
My son has had croup many times but I want to be sure he needs to go to the ER before I go since I would have to ask my brother to take me and I would hear it from him if it was an unneeded trip.

DS woke up over an hr ago with croup, I put on the nebulizer with Albuterol, got him in the steamy bathroom for 20 min and went outside for a few more min. Since then, he got much better but I think I see retractions and can hear him breath (like snoring, no wheezing), and when he takes a really deep breath the stridor is pretty loud.

Stupid question but what is stridor? To me I don't think its er worthy unless he is struggling to breath.

I'd probably go in if I thought I saw retractions. The only time I've dealt with retractions and stridor, though, is when my child aspirated a peanut. I hope the little guy is okay!

My daughter got croup really bad on Christmas and had never really been sick so I took her to the ER ASAP when she started having trouble breathing and a high fever at the hospital the fever went down and she got oral steps to calm her throat swelling down.
Here's what they told me I need to go in for.

A barking seal like cough that gets worse

If the child has a hard time breathing

A high fever and vomiting

Any circulation of the face and extremities face lips hands toes (mostly would happen to the face) basically if you see him start turning blue therefore having trouble breathing.

They told me she would sound loud and whezzy but those thing are the things to go to the ER for.
Sorry for any dumb spelling mistakes I'm on my phone.

Hope your soon feels better! Tylenol and lots of fluids helped my little one. Also a fan they said the cool circulation could help along with stream baths.

That's what I'm thinking I just can't tell, now I see him better. I think it was more obvious because he was laying down rather than laying on his pillows.

I say ER because he has an appt at a clinic on Mon, they refuse to see him sooner because he is a new patient. I he needs steroids so it doesn't continue happening, that's what his doctor in NY would give him.

Yeah DS has gotten steroids, epinephrine, and albuterol before because of croup. I feel horrible because I knew it was coming, the cough started yesterday and I had the nebulizer ready so if he woke up with an attack I could just plug it and put it on him. Sure enough, I had to do this. He is sounding better but I'm gonna take him so I can ask them to prescribe steroids like his doctor used to do in NY, so I can keep it home and give it to him when he develops the croupy cough. I don't wanna wait until Monday and risk another attack during the weekend.

Stridor with retractions? I'd go to the ER for sure, like NOW!!!!!!!
Retractions are a sign of an obstruction.

And if I had to wait for a ride I'd be calling 911. ALS (Paramedics) can manage his airway if he gets worse.

I'm normally not one for promoting calling 911. With with a little one with retractions... I would. (been an EMT for 13 years)

What does the childs nailbeds look like? Pink ? Purplish blue tinge?

He has gotten better, when he was laying down it was a little difficult for him to breath.

He has to see an ENT because his tonsils are too big, croup makes things more difficult for him. I'm still going in because I really want to get a prescription for prednisolone. He is breathing without stridor but when he takes a deep breath I can hear it.

Thats good!!!!

But anytime you see retractions like that you really should seek help right away.

Hopefully they figure things out for you!! Good luck!

Next time he is like that please done hesitate I know he is better now but next time he may not respond to just albuterol an steam! My son is the same way. The vocal chords ore swelling which is the sound you hear. They can continue swelling- they can even start to close off the air way ( personal experience )

If that ever happens, I do have an epi pen for him. If I continued hearing the wheezing or if the stridor was worse than it was, I wouldn't have hesitated. I did take him to the ER already and he was given prednisolone. The doctor told me I caught just in time and it shouldn't get worse.

I can't remember, my memory really sucks lol. Croup scares me too! I have called EMS 2 times for my son. One time I insisted that he needed meds but the paramedics said no but when we got to the ER, he was wheezing and needed a couple of nebulizer treatments.
