cluster feeding

i'm breastfeeding of course.. and just wanted input on the topic of cluster feeding. my boy is 3 days old today, and just today alone started 'cluster feeding'? - well i would assume that's what it is. he will eat for about 5 mins, and fall asleep so i would put him in his bassinet. as soon as i put him down, he cries. then i feed him for another 5 mins. this is like a cycle.. he'll eat about 3-4 times in an hour, but during the day he'll sleep for 3ish hours.

is this normal in a newborn? i know it is when a baby's 1-3 weeks?

s long as he eats at minimum 8-12 times in 24 hrs, the rest is normal. There is a huge range of normal behavior for newborns & nursing.

II think what you are getting is the newborn boobie drunk pass out. Try removing clothing, keeping him awake to finish, etc...but it may not work, never did with mine.

Read here & it will help you understand WHY it is happening, but it won't change anything,. It is from a hormone called CCK that aids in digestion, but it also makes some tiny ones very very sleepy.

Dd was like that. I also think their mouths get tired at first because they hve to build up muscle. I ran my fingers through her hair and tickled her chee ls to wake her up and keep going. A lactation consultant recommended wetting her hair a bit. I didn't feel the need to. I didn't mind cuddling w her all day.
