Ways to entertain a 16 month old?

posted 10th Jan
My daughter is 16 months old and obviously gets into everything possible. I bought her a play kitchen and she was in love with it for a couple days but that has since vanished and she's back to being bored, and throwing tantrums if she opens the cabinets and tries to throw everything out and you stop her and try to get her to play with something else.

Is there anything that you do to help entertain your toddler that actually works?

Arts and crafts (check out pinterest)
Anything to do with water and homemade palydough that is good and safe to eat.
Playing outside, (we love to play in the rain here) Just going for walks to blow some steam off.

Dancing to music and singing songs and doing rhymes etc.....

I put all my plastic bowls in one cabinet and redirect her there when she gets into kitchen cabinets (Ps cleaners are locked up). She has an area of her own throughout common living spaces. But musical stuff, and playing with her, mine loves driving toy cars around, etc.

I like the playdough idea! I think she'd love that, thanks

I've thought about kinda making a cabinet with plastic things that she can play with that won't hurt her. She also has this thing she does like. attempt to go in the trash can. I put the gate up but sometimes when I'm cleaning I want her in the same room as me so its easier to supervise.

yes!! she had one but i think my mom took it and used it for packing or something

the only bad thing about it was she would tip it over with her in it and sometimes cry bc she hurt herself
lol

but it did help entertain her

I taught my daughter to put stuff in the trash. So now she helps clean and thinks its a game haha but I have to watch to make sure age doesn't throw everything away.

lol shes been real good so far. She holds stuff up if I say trash its gone haha. But it started because that's how I got her to quit eating random things.

You could get her a tent to play in. We got DS one and he loves it. He's 16 months too

I find that when DD is getting into things she knows she is not supposed to be playing with, that is her cue that she is OVER stimulated, and needs to relax and do nothing for a little bit. I'll put her into her crib with one of her shows for a little bit, and get some of her mess cleaned up while she is relaxing, and when she is ready and feuled up to play- she'll call for me- come into the living room- see all of her toys moved and organized- and that is some sort of signal that everything is awesome to play with again. Also I find that the toys that are most desirable for DD are the ones that she knows I will applaud her for playing with, and interact with her. Shape sorters, magnadoodle/aqua doodle, ball pit (i chase her into and out of it biting at her feeties) stacking cups, books that I will read, etc. She plays better when I play with her- but that cant be 100% of the time. Also when I see she is getting a little bit mischevious it helps to throw on kids TV for a little bit. It sort of zones her out, gets her to redirect her attention onto the tv and away from the dvds or whatever shes playing with. By the time the commercial comes on shes over the mischeif and into her regular toys.
Maybe she has too many toys laysing around and is overwhelmed? Hide half of her toys for a week and then swap them out. it's like new toys every other week and she wont get the chance to get bored of them.
