need help

so my son is 6 and has lived with me since day one but goes to his dads every other weekend and now his dad has a girlfriend who i like and trust with my kid but now his dad is asking to have my little boy come live with him....ive thought about it alot and im thinking that this summer my son could live with his dad and come home to me everyother weekend and then when school starts back he comes back home? Does anyone else do this if so does it work good?
