Rice in bottle. Poll.

posted 10th Jan
LO is 6 months old and has reflux. It was acting up so the doctor wanted her to try the Similac Alimentum formula. He said to put rice cereal in with the bottle. The formula didn't help so we ended up switching back to her normal formula. Would rice cereal still help in her bottles? When he switched her back I forgot to ask if I'm still supposed to be adding the cereal to the Similac Sensitive formula she is now on..? I haven't been, but would that be okay?

If yes, is it one tablespoon for each ounce? Like a 6 oz bottle would have 6 tablespoons or am I not remembering correctly?

Thanks in advance.

If its by the doctors advice, it would be okay, but that is definitely way too much. I put rice cereal in with my daughter's, but hers was like 1 tsp per 8 oz bottle, not very much at all.

I do look back and realize the rice cereal didn't help her much either, and we weren't putting it in for very long.

yes it will still help the acid reflux. you usually don't need that much, honestly. depending on the baby, i guess. if he'll eat it off a spoon, i'd go with that idea. if not, just make sure the combination isn't very thick so he doesn't possibly choke on it.

She refuses solids and when I do get her to take a small bite she gags on it and usually ends up throwing up.. she has severe reflux. The doctor is going to send her to a specialist in a couple weeks if it doesn't improve. He has tried everything he can so we'll see.

My oldest daughter had severe reflux, like she would have attacks, and it would close up her esophagus, and it was actually something she had to outgrow, there was not much they could do for her.

I don't prop her bottles. Literally all eyes have to be on her while she eats. She stops breathing at times while she eats.

was it your doctor that suggested the oatmeal?

We had to do 6 tbs per 6-8 oz bottle for 3 years with my son. He had a mixture of horrible AR and asperation. I would say add it if your Pedi says to but I would also go to a Pedi GI and have some test run to make sure it is a bad refulx and not something else before you really go ahead and add cereal since its a risk. But sadly sometimes the risk are what you have to go with. Good luck
