Why do people try to force religion?
posted 10th Jan
I used to be Wiccan, but family made my life hell over it (threatened to take away my daughter) so I left Wicca for Christianity. That was 3 months ago. I never believed it and I've been increasingly more miserable with the whole Christianity thing. So a couple weeks ago I decided to go back to Wicca.
I felt like a liar so I came out and told everyone that I am not, and never was Christian. I was very polite about it and apologized for disappointing everyone.
Now several people are saying I need to go to church ASAP and that Satan is just blinding me to the truth, etc. Very few have accepted my confession.
Why do people feel like non-Christians are blinded and need saving? Why can't people just accept and agree to disagree?
They are making such a fuss over this that I can't stand to think about when they learn that I have went back to Wicca. I don't think I will ever leave Wicca again. Coming back honestly felt a bit like coming home, if that makes any sense.
Does anyone have any advice for me? I feel alone.
And I'm sorry if my post has errors or doesn't make sense. I'm on my phone.

I dunno. I'm very open about my atheism and sometimes I think these kind of Christians feel threatened.

Why do you NEED religion? They can't take your kids away if you're Wiccan. That is of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard

they think they are SAVING you and your offspring from hell. people like that piss me off. i am kind of christian but more like i dont know for sure or i believe theres some kind of god but not necessarily the one you read about in the bible. I dont go to church and i havent really went since i was about 5. lol anyway i would tell them to mind their own business and no they cannot take your child away because of your religion.

Because they're ignorant and projecting their own fears onto you. With Christianity many people are constantly afraid of going to hell so a lot of people make it their business to go out and "save" others by introducing them to Christianity. (Not all Christians do this, I know, but if you live in the Bible belt like OP and I do you'll quickly find an oppressive atmosphere when it comes to religion.)
Just try ignore the dissenters and try to find some like-minded people.

I have found that religion is very odd, it has the nicest and most caring people and ALSO the most judgemental and self righteous people. I'm sorry but just because you go to church and worship god, it make you "holier than thou"
I hope your family becomes more understanding of your beliefs!

People don't realize that religion is a very personal choice. I am a Christian, but I would never push that on someone who just doesn't feel it. I have studied many denominations of Christianity, and many non-Christian religions, and while I feel that Christianity is right for me, finding a specific denomination has been hard. There is not one single denomination that I can agree with 100%. When I try to explain that to my very Catholic grandfather, he doesn't understand it. My SO's mother is a Jehovah's Witness, so the two ideologies often conflict.
I think you have to be true to YOU, no matter what anyone else thinks. If you feel Wicca is where you belong, then no one else can say any different.

how in the world would they have your child taken away just because of your religious belief...I'm an atheist and honestly believe that people like that shouldn't call themselves Christians...Christians are suppose to be good people, those are not good people if they can't love you because of your religious beliefs...

I am in the Bible Belt, too.

A lot of people feel that it's their duty to spread their religion to others as well as follow it themselves. It's part of their duty as a member of their religion. Personally I'm Christian but I wouldn't try to convince someone else to change religions. All I can suggest for you is keep ignoring what they say and just keep going about your normal life and way of doing things.

I think it's because you need to become Muslim. That's why. It's the best way of life and it will work for you. Now repeat after me and this statement will make you Muslim. Say: "Ash-hadu an-la illaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu an muhammad ar-rasulullah."

I deal with this crap on the daily. My mom tells me I have condemned my children to hell by not teaching them the "ways of the lord" If they don't accept you for who you are, push them out of your life. Seriously. I got so sick of the bullsmurf from my insanely hypocritical family that I told them if they weren't willing to accept who I was and not talk to me about it they wouldn't see any of us anymore. Worked pretty well. Course, I still have to hear it from people I work with, but at least most of them are intelligent.

You're right. It is a very oppressive atmosphere around here. Fortunately I do have friends around here who are Wiccan as well. They've been very helpful to me.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that they can not take away your child because of your religious beliefs....unless you belong to some sort of cult that tells you to do illegal things to/with your child.
Stay true to who you are....if they can't love you and support you, they don't deserve you.

To be honest? I wouldn't talk to ANYONE in my family about my religious beliefs, or lack there of. I don't talk to my mom about it, because I don't want it to cause a fight. No one knows where I stand and I like it this way, it's not their business.
To me, religion is like politics, I don't share my views and even when I do I try to stay vague as hell. To me those two things are personal to me and no one needs to know what I believe.
Seeing as how you already told them, I would ignore them, and their views of you. If you feel confident in Wicca, then you shouldn't allow ANYONE to change your mind, or make you doubt your choice.
