I'm due on Tuesday, currently 2 cm dilated and effacing, baby is fully engaged. I know I could still go overdue, but this is just in case. I have been having inconsistent contractions for a while. I know I want to labor at home for as long as I can before I go to the hospital. The thing is, the hospital is about 45 minutes away in normal traffic. We've gotten a ton of snow, and it's still snowing. It took us an hour and about 15 minutes to get there last time in the snow. How long would you wait to go to the hospital under these conditions?

My contractions were 3 minutes apart when I left my house and it took an hour to get to the hospital.
I was only 5cms when I got there.
I say you'll know when you need to leave, but honestly I wouldn't wait until you cannot talk through contractions.

Probably if contractions were 6 mins apart since you've had another child.

How did your labor go with your first? Use that as a semi gauge to determine. With both my boys I was in labor 18 hours from start to when my baby was born. With my second I should have stayed at home a lot longer because I got stressed at the hospital and labor didn't progress as fast as with my first when I waited longer at home.

I was induced at 39+5 and hadn't dilated more than half a centimeter on my own. So this is already way different.

Ah. Then I would have to agree with another poster in probably 6 minutes apart or so to head to the hospital. Or call your doctor and see what they think since you live far away?

i agree w/ about 6min apart....(unless the snow gets really bad) I would think about getting a hotel room closer to the hospital for the weekend (if its affordable & the forecast is for more snow)

That's a good idea.

I wish! Dh and I wanted a baby moon so bad, but right now is not a time we can afford something like that. Having semi-uncomfortable contractions 9 minutes apart now. Guess I should start paying more attention...

w/my 5th baby contractions went from 10min apart to 5min apart in an hour and then jumped to 3min apart w/in 15min....she was born w/in 2hrs of of the 3min apart contractions started. Dr. said if i had showed up 20min later i wouldve been 2 late to get an epidural

My contractions are tricky. They go from 10 minutes, to 8, to 6, to stop.

I tended to go in when mine were 10 minutes apart, because they were really effective. So, each time I went in, I stayed(even in preterm labor, I stayed so they could stop the labor). At that point I was only 5 minutes away from my hospital. I probably could have stayed home longer, but with my 3rd, my labor was only 6 hours from start to finish, almost didn't have time for an epidural.
